32-bit Dartium is difficult to run on 64-bit versions of Linux

Creating a single bug around this to track status and best workarounds.

We currently provide only 32-bit versions of Dartium. Once the Dart VM is more mature on 64-bit architectures, we will provide a 64-bit version of Dartium for Linux.

Until then, you can run the 32-bit Dartium on your 64-bit Linux, but you will need to ensure that the proper 32-bit versions of libraries are installed. You can find that list of libraries here:

We'll update this bug with distro-specific instructions folks have come up with.

yum install libnss3.so
yum install GConf2.i686
yum install alsa-lib.i686

Create these links in the /lib folder:
ln -s libcrypto.so.10 libcrypto.so.0.9.8
ln -s libbz2.so.1 libbz2.so.1.0

In order to run Dartium on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit, you need to install libgconf2:i386 which is not co-installable with libgconf2:amd64. That huge changes to your system if you want to run Dartium. You need to provide a 64 bit version.

I still can't get a recent DartEditor to run on Fedora 16 64-bit. It seems I'm down to last shared library that can't be found:

$ ldd dart-sdk/chromium/chrome | grep found
    libbz2.so.1.0 => not found

the versions of the library that I do have installed are:

$ ldconfig -p | grep libbz
    libbz2.so.1 (libc6,x86-64) => /lib64/libbz2.so.1
    libbz2.so.1 (libc6) => /lib/libbz2.so.1
    libbz2.so (libc6,x86-64) => /usr/lib64/libbz2.so
    libbz2.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libbz2.so

But I'm unable to create a symlink named libbz2.so.1.0. If I make one named like that, ldconfig rejects it for some reason:

ln -s /lib/libbz2.so.1 libbz2.so.1.0

ldconfig

ll | grep libbz

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Apr 17 22:06 libbz2.so.1 -> libbz2.so.1.0

It seems that ldconfig doesn't like the 1.0 suffix in this setup.

interesting. In Arch, the "libgconf2:i386" can be "co-installable with libgconf2:amd6". I guess this may be related to the problem of the corresponding package management system for different distros.

With the introduce of the multilib into arch, the offical dependencis instructions for arch seem not workable any more. I wrote a small note for resolving the installling dependecies for arch [1] in last weekend FYI. But it must to say that, we all welcome a native 64 bit version of Dartium:)

I just ran into this on ubuntu 64 precise.. My error was :

...chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I just ran this to fix :

sudo apt-get install libnss3-dev:i386

It doesn't run on 11.10 oneiric 64 either, since there's no 32-bit version of libgconf-2.so.4 available (more precisely: libgconf-2.so.4 is not installable since it depends on gconf2-common:i386 which is not available).

I had successfully installed all dependencies via install-build-deps.sh from https://code.google.com/p/dart/wiki/PreparingYourMachine, so I suggest that missing dependency should be added.

Unfortunately, libudev.so.0 for ia32 is unavailable in Debian testing. Though, there's a sloppy workaround:

1. Download i386 libudev0 from http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/libudev0/download
2. Extract it: $ dpkg -X libudev0_175-3.1_i386.deb /tmp
3. Use LD_PRELOAD to force it's loading: $ export LD_PRELOAD=/tmp/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libudev.so.0
4. Within the same shell as the LD_PRELOAD, run ./DartEditor
5. 'Run' a project and watch it work!

You may see errors like "LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored." I suspect that's because for 64 bit things, the 32 bit ELF is rejected and the correct one is used (maybe?).

Actually, though, if you do ln -s /usr/lib64/libudev.so.1 /usr/lib64/libudev.so.0 , recent versions of Chrome for Fedora x86_64 will crash intermittently. We really need a build of Dartium linked against libudev.so.1, or we need a way to make Dartium think libudev.so.1 is actually libudev.so.0 without using a softlink.

Here's a solution for the libudev problem: assuming you have installed dart in /opt/dart, use patchelf to make Dartium depend upon a local softlink:

Still need this

sudo ln -s /usr/lib64/libbz2.so.1 /usr/lib64/libbz2.so.1.0

Patch Dartium

sudo yum -y install patchelf
ln -s /usr/lib64/libudev.so.1 /opt/dart/chromium/libudev.so.0
