CAF did not use WALT on msm-4.4 kernels and left out important WALT bits.
Energy cost estimation has been a long lasting challenge for WALT because WALT guides CPU frequency based on the CPU utilization of previous window. Consequently it's not possible to know newly waking-up task's energy cost until WALT's end of the current window. The WALT already tracks 'Previous Runnable Sum' (prev_runnable_sum) and 'Cumulative Runnable Average' (cr_avg). They are designed for CPU frequency guidance and task placement but unfortunately both are not suitable for the energy cost estimation. It's because using prev_runnable_sum for energy cost calculation would make us to account CPU and task's energy solely based on activity in the previous window so for example, any task didn't have an activity in the previous window will be accounted as a 'zero energy cost' task. Energy estimation with cr_avg is what energy_diff() relies on at present. However cr_avg can only represent instantaneous picture of energy cost thus for example, if a CPU was fully occupied for an entire WALT window and became idle just before window boundary, and if there is a wake-up, energy_diff() accounts that CPU is a 'zero energy cost' CPU. As a result, introduce a new accounting unit 'Cumulative Window Demand'. The cumulative window demand tracks all the tasks' demands have seen in current window which is neither instantaneous nor actual execution time. Because task demand represents estimated scaled execution time when the task runs a full window, accumulation of all the demands represents predicted CPU load at the end of window. Thus we can estimate CPU's frequency at the end of current WALT window with the cumulative window demand. The use of prev_runnable_sum for the CPU frequency guidance and cr_avg for the task placement have not changed and these are going to be used for both purpose while this patch aims to add an additional statistics. Use do_div() instead of "/" operator to fix undefined references to "__aeabi_uldivmod" build error for ARCH=arm. Also in TP_fast_assign(), along with do_div() usage, replace "," with ";" which would have resulted in a syntax error (!), because '#define TP_fast_assign(args...) args' would have stripped off the "," and left white space between these two assignments after CPP phase. Active balance currently picks one task to migrate from busy cpu to a chosen cpu (push_cpu). This patch extends active load balance to recognize a particular task ('push_task') that needs to be migrated to 'push_cpu'. This capability will be leveraged by HMP-aware task placement in a subsequent patch. If there have misfit task on one CPU, current code does not handle this situation for nohz idle balance. As result, we can see the misfit task stays run on little core for long time. So this patch check if the CPU has misfit task or not. If has misfit task then kick nohz idle balance so finally can execute active balance. EAS won't allow NOHZ idle balancer until CPU's over utilized. However nohz_kick_needed() can return true. This causes idle CPU wake up for nothing. Change-Id: I6e548442e29e4f85cda695e4c7101dd591b12fe6 Signed-off-by: Joonwoo Park <[email protected]>
Upmigrate misfit current task upon scheduler tick with stopper. We can kick an random (not necessarily big CPU) NOHZ idle CPU when a CPU bound task is in need of upmigration. But it's not efficient as that way needs following unnecessary wakeups: 1. Busy little CPU A to kick idle B 2. B runs idle balancer and enqueue migration/A 3. B goes idle 4. A runs migration/A, enqueues busy task on B. 5. B wakes up again. This change makes active upmigration more efficiently by doing: 1. Busy little CPU A find target CPU B upon tick. 2. CPU A enqueues migration/A. Change-Id: Ie865738054ea3296f28e6ba01710635efa7193c0 [joonwoop: The original version had logic to reserve CPU. If CPU is about to idle, prevent a frequency update. With the number of schedutil governor wake ups are reduced by more than half on a test playing bluetooth audio. Test: sugov wake ups drop by more than half when playing music with screen off (476 / 1092) Bug: 64689959 Change-Id: I400026557b4134c0ac77f51c79610a96eb985b4a Signed-off-by: Joel Fernandes <[email protected]>
CPU rq util updates happen when rq signals are updated as part of enqueue and dequeue operations. Doing these updates triggers a call to the registered util update handler, which takes schedtune boosting into account. Enqueueing the task in the correct schedtune group after this happens means that we will potentially not see the boost for an entire throttle period. Move the enqueue/dequeue operations for schedtune before the signal updates which can trigger OPP changes. This patch fixes one of the infrequent conditions in commit 54b6baeca500 ("sched/fair: Skip frequency updates if CPU about to idle") where we could have skipped a frequency update. The fix is to use the correct flag which skips freq updates. Note that this is a rare issue (can show up only during CFS throttling) and even then we just do an additional frequency update which we were doing anyway before the above patch. We will need to take care to ensure that every do_stune_boost() we call is followed eventually by a reset_stune_boost() so that stune_boost_count is managed correctly. This allows us to stack several Dynamic Schedtune Boosts and reset only when all Dynamic Schedtune Boosts have been disengaged. Signed-off-by: joshuous <[email protected]>
It does not make sense to be unable to reset Schedtune boost for a particular Schedtune group if another Schedtune group's boost is still active. Instead of using a global count, we should use a per-Schedtune group count to keep track of active boosts taking place. Signed-off-by: joshuous <[email protected]>
This was confusing to deal with given that it had the same name as the Dynamic Schedtune Boost framework. It will be more apt to call it sched_boost given that it was created to work with the sched_boost feature in CAF devices. The new tunable can be found in /dev/stune/*/schedtune.sched_boost Signed-off-by: joshuous <[email protected]>
To reflect that the function is to be used mainly with CAF's devices that have sched_boost. However, developers may use it as a switch to dynamically boost schedtune to the values specified in /dev/stune/*/schedtune.sched_boost. Signed-off-by: joshuous <[email protected]>
…ystem Switch from a counter-based system to a slot-based system for managing multiple dynamic Schedtune boost requests. The primary limitations of the counter-based system was that it could only keep track of two boost values at a time: the current dynamic boost value and the default boost value. When more than one boost request is issued, the system would only remember the highest value of them all. Even if the task that requested the highest value had unboosted, this value is still maintained as long as there are other active boosts that are still running. A more ideal outcome would be for the system to unboost to the maximum boost value of the remaining active boosts. The slot-based system provides a solution to the problem by keeping track of the boost values of all ongoing active boosts. It ensures that the current boost value will be equal to the maximum boost value of all ongoing active boosts. This is achieved with two linked lists (active_boost_slots and available_boost_slots), which assign and keep track of boost slot numbers for each successful boost request. The boost value of each request is stored in an array (slot_boost[]), at an index value equal to the assigned boost slot number. For now we limit the number of active boost slots to 5 per Schedtune group. Signed-off-by: joshuous <[email protected]>

commit ca4463bf8438b403596edd0ec961ca0d4fbe0220 upstream. The VT_DISALLOCATE ioctl can free a virtual console while tty_release() is still running, causing a use-after-free in con_shutdown(). This occurs because VT_DISALLOCATE considers a virtual console's 'struct vc_data' to be unused as soon as the corresponding tty's refcount hits 0. But actually it may be still being closed. Fix this by making vc_data be reference-counted via the embedded 'struct tty_port'. A newly allocated virtual console has refcount 1. Opening it for the first time increments the refcount to 2. Closing it for the last time decrements the refcount (in tty_operations::cleanup() so that it happens late enough), as does VT_DISALLOCATE. Reproducer: #include <fcntl.h> #include <linux/vt.h> #include <sys/ioctl.h> #include <unistd.h> int main() { if (fork()) { for (;;) close(open("/dev/tty5", O_RDWR)); } else { int fd = open("/dev/tty10", O_RDWR); for (;;) ioctl(fd, VT_DISALLOCATE, 5); } } KASAN report: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in con_shutdown+0x76/0x80 drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:3278 Write of size 8 at addr ffff88806a4ec108 by task syz_vt/129 CPU: 0 PID: 129 Comm: syz_vt Not tainted 5.6.0-rc2 #11 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS ?-20191223_100556-anatol 04/01/2014 Call Trace: [...] con_shutdown+0x76/0x80 drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:3278 release_tty+0xa8/0x410 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1514 tty_release_struct+0x34/0x50 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1629 tty_release+0x984/0xed0 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1789 [...] Allocated by task 129: [...] kzalloc include/linux/slab.h:669 [inline] vc_allocate drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:1085 [inline] vc_allocate+0x1ac/0x680 drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:1066 con_install+0x4d/0x3f0 drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:3229 tty_driver_install_tty drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1228 [inline] tty_init_dev+0x94/0x350 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1341 tty_open_by_driver drivers/tty/tty_io.c:1987 [inline] tty_open+0x3ca/0xb30 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:2035 [...] Freed by task 130: [...] kfree+0xbf/0x1e0 mm/slab.c:3757 vt_disallocate drivers/tty/vt/vt_ioctl.c:300 [inline] vt_ioctl+0x16dc/0x1e30 drivers/tty/vt/vt_ioctl.c:818 tty_ioctl+0x9db/0x11b0 drivers/tty/tty_io.c:2660 [...] Fixes: 4001d7b ("vt: push down the tty lock so we can see what is left to tackle") Cc: <[email protected]> # v3.4+ Reported-by: [email protected] Acked-by: Jiri Slaby <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Eric Biggers <[email protected]> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <[email protected]>

[ Upstream commit c5c97cadd7ed13381cb6b4bef5c841a66938d350 ] The ubsan reported the following error. It was because sample's raw data missed u32 padding at the end.
