First you need to download, install and open the Skycoin desktop wallet, as it is used as the main way to interact with the hardware wallet. You can download it from https://www.skycoin.net/downloads/.

//Linux users may need to run this script before continuing: https://github.com/skycoin/hardware-wallet/blob/master/tiny-firmware/prepare-sky-hw.sh . Maybe the script should be stored on another place, like the downloads page of the website//

//For being able to use the hardware wallet the hardware wallet daemon must be running. However, it is not yet totally clear what this process will be like.//

Before continuing, make sure the hardware wallet is connected.

First steps:

After opening the desktop wallet, if no wallet has yet been added to it, the blue wizard screen will be displayed, allowing you to create a new wallet. In this case, since the goal is not to create a software wallet but use the hardware wallet, ignore the form and simply press the “Using a hardware wallet?” button:

If one or more wallets had already been added to the desktop wallet, then you won’t see the wizard, but the list with all the wallets you have added to the desktop wallet. In this case you must press the "Hardware Wallet" button at the end of the wallet list:

After pressing any of those buttons, if the device has not been initialized before, you will have to install a firmware to it, following the instructions indicated in the next section. If you have already installed a firmware to the device, you can ignore the next section and jump to the following one. Please see the How to check whether device is genuine section to know in which state the device should be if it is being used for the first time.

Installing the firmware:

If the device does not have a firmware, after following the previous steps the updater window will be opened:

After accepting the operation in the computer, you just have to follow the instructions in the device. The process should take only a few seconds.

While installing the firmware, some problem or an accidental cancelation via the device physical buttons could prevent the process from finishing correctly. If this happens, you just have to retry the process, but please disconnect and reconnect the device before doing it. Also, you could need to close and reopen the desktop wallet if it does not allow to start the process again.

Configuring the device:

If the hardware wallet has a firmware and its screen shows the “NEEDS SEED!” message, the desktop wallet will show this window:

That is the hardware wallet options window and, as the connected device has not been configured yet, it allows you to make your hardware wallet to behave as a totally new device or to recover the coins from a backup that you had previously made.

To configure your device as a new one, simply press the “Configure Automatically” button and follow the instructions. If you want to recover coins from a backup, follow the instructions on the Restore configuration section of this manual.

After finishing, the following window is displayed, informing that the process has been completed correctly and allowing you to change the name with which the hardware wallet will be identified:

If the hardware wallet is not connected to the computer, this error message is displayed:
