resources
a list of resources beyond this wiki
[todo: may have to split this and place a resources page in each category]
note: try to order resources by putting the most grassrooted on top
the best method may be to simply just ask friends or theory-oriented people what their most commonly shared and favorite resources are...
A list of physical and digital places where fighters are likely to be found.
It’s likely a combination of:
- a group of local physical hangout spots (a friend’s home, an organizer’s home, a local game shop, a local arcade, a university common room...),
- a chat channel (irc, aim, teamspeak, steam, discord, etc.)
- a local-based forums (which includes the knowledge-base) — this could be part of a larger forum (as in smashboards); a sub-forum
Nowadays, most of the communities moved from forums to chat channels (discord), though still keeping their forums, using them less frequently, more for things that should be written.., or for re-living old memories.
these forums brought disparate grassroots communities together, usually collectivizing beneath a single game. They were also the OG place for heated discussions in the 90s and 2000s, making them possibly the best written source for writings and discussions on theory.
-
smashboards, the smash forums; avoid the main site: it has a more commercial appearance, stick to the forums content; still hasn’t changed from old forums software to discourse
- themeleelibrary contains a giant list of links ‘n short summary to great smashboards posts, this is an incredible way to save old content for the next gen, wow
- shoryuken, the forums for Street Fighter and possibly most traditional 2D fighting games; avoid the main site: it has become commercialized, full of click-bait articles, stick to the forums content; updated to discourse; try searching for ‘theory #fighting-games:fighting-game-discussion’
- ...
these are can be grassrooted, a mix of grassroots and uprooted (often suburban or remote, even international individuals), or absolutely uprooted. No matter their roots, most still attempt to be communities.
- blippi’s list
- smashcords by Lewdcario, attempts to gather public discord servers, especially grassroots / regional ones
- FGC discord compendium, a massive community made and maintained list of tfg discord servers, grassroots / regional servers from all over the world are listed and categorized
- disboard, [todo: my discord discovery doesn’t work on iOS], you have to try various tags (melee, ssbm, smash; fgc, fighting-games; etc.) because the search function sucks and servers are limited to using 5 tags
- The People’s Server, Scar’s server; Scar can be quite the conceptual minded commentator, therefore likely attracting like-minds
- Hoop Squad; Sajam (‘n Tasty Steve?) ‘n squad’s server; Sajam is a more analytical game commentator, therefore also likely attracting like-minds
- Melee Newbie Netplay, 1000+ online!, seems helpful
- Melee Training Room, solely by the description, seems to have good morals and a friendly environment and helpful
- fighting game anarchy :) :)
- Fight Game Base, as in database, seems to be documentation-oriented
- Game Dev League, massive, like 10,000+ people?, notably good because there are no lame restrictions (game-oriented, software-oriented)
- Weekly Game Jam, 3000+ online, a general game-making server, surely can find people to make stuff with here and share game-making knowledge and tools with
avoid these places! unless you only follow your real local friends... these are weird places where egos and fan-ts-girls thrive :/
- twitter, can be good for messaging people who you don’t know / gaining contacts
- twitch, can be used like a chill temporary personal discord server :)
- reddit, zero local organization; avoid
- etc. non-grassroots oriented web software
a list of most game-specific wikis, smashwiki ‘n so on... a wiki for all traditional FGs gamepedia.com/fandom.com wikis, these just give data about the game. These are mostly for hardcore fanboys and fangirls, ew! Though, some of these wikis may contain frame data, referenced from elsewhere.

- lol. these were probably written by much later generations and probably need some love
local
national / international / major
generally, info-making is a mess, scattered among individual sites, dis-organized ‘n chaotic, but this is natural
