i think it might be a good idea to categorize them by genre. First based on the camera style, then based on input: traditional, smash, simple (for simple indie games, Bomberman deathmatch, etc.), ‘n so on.

i think it may be best order it by simplicity, with simple on top. But still keep it separated by genre, since FPS is quite different from traditional fgs.

simple fighting games :)

this is the genre i plan to make games in, working my way up in complexity

  • Towerfall, the standard example of a minimal fighting game
  • Crawl, an absolute gem, though not a fighting game, it’s compelling to imagine if it were one
  • SamuraiGunn, a great example of a very minimal fighting game
  • Nidhogg, cool for 10 minutes... some good ideas in it though
  • BrawlHalla, never played, appears to be smash-like
  • Spelunky (death-match mode)

these games neither contain special moves nor combo moves (but has a ton of combos!!), making them way way more accessible and intuitive (but by no means simple)

it would be nice to include a curated list of fighting game prototypes, collecting game prototypes that have interesting or good game systems ‘n mechanics.

SFII-like games without special moves/attacks

SF-II-like games aka traditional fighters

this is where a lot of good traditional fighting games should belong. They often have special moves... but I’d be vey very curious and separate the ones that didn’t, and list them under Smash-like games.

  • Garou: Mark of the Wind
  • Samurai Shodown
  • ...

SFII-like games with combo moves (built-in the game, different from natural combos)

these games, often in addition to the already having a list of special moves for each character, added giant strings of inputs in order to execute a combo move. Avoid these games!

  • Mortal Kombat [series], starting from MKIII
  • Killer Instinct [series], this is a series based off of that single stupid idea!
  • Tekken [series], this game at least blended combos, special moves, and normal attacks in an interesting way...
  • ...

battle games? party games?

these games often made you do something else to fight your opponent, like fetching an item to throw at them. Many of these games existed as a separate mode of a much larger single player game.

  • Mario Kart [series] (battle mode)

battle sports games?

some-times sports mix with fighting... but it usually just distracts from the fighting... it’s less direct, as the goal isn’t beating the other person up. But... if you were to take out the sports part of the game, they can turn into a fighting game. For example, try playing Pole Riders, but change your objective to kill the other person. Boom. Now it’s a fighting game!

not a fighting game at all, not even a battle sports game, but good to have so we know how to separate

if you were to take out the item aspect of these games, they could all be potentially great fighting games. They often have a fighting game mode: PvP, arena, battlegrounds.

i can’t recall... but i don’t think these took off compared to traditional or FPS
