eventually this may use a database. [title: fgdb?]

i think it’s a good idea to categorize them by genre, especially based on the input: traditional, smash, simple (for indie games, Bomberman deathmatch, etc.)

i think it may be best order it by simplicity, with simple on top, but still keep it separated by genre, since FPS is quite different from traditional fgs.

sources

wikipedia, some lovely soul put their heart out into making this list, it’s even categorized!!
a list of full games made with mugen
fightbase, hella ugly on my iPad, but maybe can ask for their data?
could try getting a list of games used at evo
could try searching for e-sports games, although disliking the word very much

the list

video games

maybe can separate battle games from fighting games somehow

simple fighting games :)

this is the genre i plan to make games in, working my way up in complexity

  • Towerfall
  • SamuraiGunn
  • Foiled
  • Spelunky (death-match mode)

Smash-like games

these games neither contain special moves nor combo moves (but has a ton of combos!!), making them way way more accessible and intuitive

  • Smash [series]
  • Rivals of Ether

SFII-like games without special moves/attacks

  • ?

SF-II-like games with special moves/attacks

this is where a lot of good traditional fighting games should belong. They often have special moves... but I’d be vey very curious and separate the ones that didn’t

  • Street Fighter [series]
  • King of Fighters [series]
  • Guilty Gear [series]
  • Samurai Showdown
  • ...

SFII-like games with combo moves (built-in the game, different from natural combos)

these games, often in addition to the already list of cumbersome special moves added a giant string of inputs in order to execute a combo move. Avoid these games!

  • Mortal Kombat [series], starting from MKIII
  • Killer Instinct [series], this is a series based off of that single stupid idea!
  • Tekken [series], this series blends combos, special moves, and normal attacks in an interesting way...
  • ...

battle games?

these games made you do something else to fight your opponent

  • Super Mario Bros. (vs mode)
  • Bomberman (death-match mode)
  • various mini-games from Mario Party [series]
  • various mini-games from WarioWare [series]
  • Mario Kart [series] (battle mode)

battle sports games?

some-times sports mix with fighting... but it usually just distracts from the fighting... it’s less direct, as the goal isn’t beating the other person up. But... if you were to take out the sports part of the game, they can turn into a fighting game. For example, try playing Pole Riders, but change your objective to kill the other person. Boom. Now it’s a fighting game!

  • Crystal Brawl, :)
  • Pole Riders, one of my favorite fighting games of all time!
  • BariBariBall, along with Crystal Brawl, one of the best examples of this genre
  • Hokra, possibly the most minimal example of this genre

sports games

not a fighting game at all, not even a battle sports game, but good to have so we know how to separate

  • Super Tecmo Bowl
  • all standard sports games

third-person camera view

isometric (wtf does that even mean?)

  • Diablo [series]
  • Guild Wars [series]
  • World of Warcraft [series] (some sort of arena mode?)

actually 3d third person

i can’t recall... but i don’t think these took off as traditional or FPS have

  • ?

third-person camera fixed view

this seems to be an unexplored category... There’s surely some PowerStone lovers out there in the fgc world.

  • PowerStone
  • various mini-games from Mario Party
  • ...?

first-person camera view

deathmatch

  • Half-Life (deathmatch)
    • a ton of awesome half-life mods
  • Quake Deathmatch
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Halo (deathmatch modes)
  • GoldenEye (deathmatch modes)
battle royale
  • PUBG
  • Fortnite
  • SpellCaster [or whatever it’s called]

team deathmatch

these games, like sports games, often have an objective other than killing the enemy. Most have a pure deatchmatch mode tho.

    • a ton of awesome half-life mods:
  • Team Fortresss [series]
  • Counter-Strike [series]
  • Vampire Slayer
  • Dystopia
  • Left 4 Dead
  • ...
  • GoldenEye
  • Halo [series]
  • Call of Duty [series, after CoD:MW]

RTS:

StarCraft [series]

  • arena custom maps (like DOTA), wherein you control a single unit

turn-based?

ew card games
