Debugging related plugins should "lazy-load" only when debugging keys are pressed, but the default configuration kickstart provides prevents it from lazy-loading.

The keys property had local variables dap and dap-ui that used require and prevented all DAP related plugins from lazy-loading. Fixed this by changing keys to a table and substituting the local variables with a anonymous function.

nvim-dap and all dap related plugins now load only when any debugging related keybinds are pressed.
Reduces neovim start-up time by around 100ms (depending on your hardware).

Good point! You could rewrite it into more readable and without repeating the require() statements.

  keys = function()
    local dap = require('dap')
    local dapui = require('dapui')
    local keys = {
      -- Basic debugging keymaps, feel free to change to your liking!
      { '<F5>', dap.continue, desc = 'Debug: Start/Continue' },
      { '<F1>', dap.step_into, desc = 'Debug: Step Into' },
      { '<F2>', dap.step_over, desc = 'Debug: Step Over' },
      { '<F3>', dap.step_out, desc = 'Debug: Step Out' },
      { '<leader>b', dap.toggle_breakpoint, desc = 'Debug: Toggle Breakpoint' },
      {
        '<leader>B',
        function()
          dap.set_breakpoint(vim.fn.input('Breakpoint condition: '))
        end,
        desc = 'Code Debug: Set Breakpoint',
      },
      -- Toggle to see last session result. Without this, you can't see session output in case of unhandled exception.
      { '<F7>', dapui.toggle, desc = 'Debug: See last session result.' },
    }

    return keys
  end,

(Sorry, for the edits. I should have tested it first!)

@rgruyters No actually, if you have those local variables dap and dap-ui, it is preventing lazy from somehow evaluating what are the keys for nvim-dap without loading it first, that's why I replaced all the local variables with requires even tho it is kind of repetitive.

Check if your code lazy loads nvim-dap properly (i.e it shouldn't load at all unless you press any of the debug keybinds), it doesn't on my machine. If it does on yours then I will assume there maybe some issue with my configuration and close this pull request

@rgruyters

could rewrite it into more readable

From this point of view, the following approach might be useful.

Comment on lines +29 to +63
{
'<F5>',
function()
require('dap').continue()
end,
desc = 'Debug: Start/Continue',
},
{
'<F1>',
function()
require('dap').step_into()
end,
desc = 'Debug: Step Into',
},
{
'<F2>',
function()
require('dap').step_over()
end,
desc = 'Debug: Step Over',
},
{
'<F3>',
function()
require('dap').step_out()
end,
desc = 'Debug: Step Out',
},
{
'<leader>b',
function()
require('dap').toggle_breakpoint()
end,
desc = 'Debug: Toggle Breakpoint',
},

I would like to suggest that we try this approach:

    { '<F5>', <cmd>DapContinue<CR>, desc = 'Debug: Start/Continue' },
    { '<F1>', <cmd>DapStepInto<CR>, desc = 'Debug: Step Into' },
    { '<F2>', <cmd>DapStepOver<CR>, desc = 'Debug: Step Over' },
    { '<F3>', <cmd>DapStepOut<CR>, desc = 'Debug: Step Out' },
    { '<leader>b', <cmd>DapToggleBreakpoint<CR>, desc = 'Debug: Toggle Breakpoint' },

Ok I have tested this and this works ok, and lazy loads nvim-dap but it is missing the <F7> and <leader>B keybinds and I dont know the commands for those. (dap-ui toggle and set breakpoint condition respectively)

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a user command defined for them at this time.
There are several ways to do like:

  • Create a user command
vim.api.nvim_create_user_command('DapUiToggle', function()
  require('dapui').toggle()
end, { nargs = 0 })
return {
  ...
    { '<F7>', '<cmd>DapUiToggle<CR>', desc = 'Debug: See last session result.' },
  ...
}
  • Write as a command of lua function
return {
  ...
    { '<F7>', '<cmd>lua require("dapui").toggle()<CR>', desc = 'Debug: See last session result.' },
  ...
}
  • Keep the status quo

I'm not going to be involved in the decision which you choose, and there might well be a better way of doing it.
In any case, it would be best to leave the final decision to the community.

* cleanup: refactor which-key configuration for cleaner setup (nvim-lua#1102)

- Moved `which-key` configuration from inline `config` to `opts` for better organization.
- Updated the key mappings setup to use `spec` for defining existing key chains.
- Removed deprecated or unnecessary comments and code.

This change aligns with updated `which-key` configuration practices, improving readability and maintainability as recommended by @VlaDexa in nvim-lua#1068.

* Fix the which-key spec issue caused by recent cleanup (nvim-lua#1113)

The recent cleanup accidentally broke the leader key specs
because the spec block was in the wrong level of braces.
That resulted in which-key no longer showing the description
of the <leader> key chains such as [S]earch and others.

* fix(lazy): added error handling for bootstrap (nvim-lua#1001)

* Fix neo-tree keymap description (nvim-lua#932)

The lazy.nvim keys parameter does not need the `desc` to

With this fix the keymap description will be properly
shown for example in telescope keymap search

* fix: prevent mason setup from being run twice (nvim-lua#1298)

* fix: prevent mason setup from being run twice

Addresses nvim-lua#1297

Currently, we're calling `require('mason').setup(...)` twice:
* once when setting it as a dependency of `nvim-lspconfig` (since we set
	`config = true`)
* once in the `config` function we define for `nvim-lspconfig`

Calling setup twice can cause issues with, e.g., setting the `PATH`
option: you might append Mason's bin dir in one setup call and prepend
it in the other.

We've kept the setup of `mason` in the `nvim-lspconfig` dependencies
table since leaving it to the `config` function caused some
plugin-loading-order related issues in the past. See:

* Update lazydev config to fix "Undefined field `fs_stat`" LSP error (nvim-lua#1040)

7513ec8 switched from neodev to
lazydev, but in the process it introduced an LSP error in `init.lua`,
which degrades the desired "first timer" experience of kickstart.nvim.

This commit follows the configuration suggested in
https://github.com/folke/lazydev.nvim/tree/6184ebbbc8045d70077659b7d30c705a588dc62f#-installation
which resolves the LSP error.

* performance: defer clipboard because xsel and pbcopy can be slow (nvim-lua#1049)

* Remove treesitter prefer_git option (nvim-lua#1061)

- It's not safe and can corrupt other git repos
- nvim-treesiter maintainers consider `prefer_git` as deprecated and no
  longer needed.

* Fix: updated the windows installation commands

* fix: remove deprecated opt for conform.nvim (nvim-lua#1070)

- changed lsp_fallback -> lsp_format
- updated format_on_save function to reflect change above

* feat: update references of tsserver to ts_ls (nvim-lua#1131)

* fix: update lazy uninstall information link (nvim-lua#1148)

* Disable linting autocmd for readonly buffers (nvim-lua#1202)

* Disable linting autocmd for readonly buffers

This should avoid linting in buffers outside of the user's control,
having in mind especially the handy LSP pop-ups that describe your
hovered symbol using markdown.
