Cooking
Boil dirty water in a kettle or cooking pot to make it safe to drink. Build a campfire, use 3 firewood to build supports, then attach the kettle or metal bucket. Add the dirty water and wait for it to boil (campfire must be lit). Once the water is clean, you can drink it directly, add it back to a container, or use it to make a stew.
Using a kettle, you can brew many different kinds of tea, each with its own unique effects. Boil water in a kettle at a campfire and then select the "Brew Tea" option to add an ingredient.
Some teas will help cure various illnesses such as the flu, dysentery or food poisoning. Others provide mild but long lasting buffs, and yet others help protect you from the elements or help you sleep.
Grilling food increases its nutritional value. It also makes meat safe to eat, as eating it raw can give you food poisoning.Attach a grill to a lit campfire, and directly place a piece of meat, vegetable or mushroom onto the grill to start cooking it. Wait until the food turns brown, then pick it up from the grill. Wait too long and the food will burn and turn black, which significantly reduces its nutrition value.
Your survival skill determines the time in between fully cooking and burning food.
Attach a cooking pot (i.e. a metal bucket) and an iron ladle in order to make stew. Fill the cooking pot with water and add ingredients, then wait for the stew to cook. Stew can be eaten directly from the cooking pot, or transferred to a container to eat later. All misc pot items (clay pots, redware pots etc) can be used to store stew.
Each food type provides a different buff when added to a stew. These buffs can last for many hours, depending on how much stew you have eaten.
-
Food: The Food type is for any ingredient which requires no preparation to count as a meal. This includes vanilla ingredients such as bread and scuttle. Food type ingredients provide a large amount of nutrition without needing to cook them.
-
Meat: Meat ingredients must be cooked in a grill or a stew before they are safe to eat. Eating raw meat has a high chance of giving the player food poisoning. Cooked meat provides a high amount of nutrition. Adding meat to a stew adds the “Hearty” buff.
-
Egg: Eggs can be eaten raw and provide a moderate amount of nutrition.
-
Vegetable: Vegetables can be safely eaten raw for a medium amount of nutrition, or they can be grilled to improve their nutrition value even further. Adding vegetables to a stew adds the “Nutritious” buff.
-
Mushroom: Mushrooms don’t provide much nutrition when eaten raw, but they can be grilled to increase the nutrition they provide. Adding mushrooms to a stew adds the “Chunky” buff.
-
Herb: Herbs do not provide much nutrition at all, however they can be added to stews to add the “Aromatic” buff. Many herbs can also be used to brew tea.
-
Seasoning: Seasonings provide next to no nutrition, but they can be added to stews to add the “Tasty” buff.
-
Other: Any ingredient that doesn’t fall into the above food types is considered an Other food type, which provides no satiation when eaten.
