Bushcrafting
The Bushcrafting mechanic allows you to have the full Ashfall survival experience without ever having to set foot in town. Start by collecting wood and flint from the ground, then make tools to allow you to harvest them from trees and rock more efficiently. In the beginning you'll be living it rough sleeping in straw beds and protecting yourself from the elements with flimsy lean-tos, but as your Bushcrafting skill improves, you'll be able to make tents, beds, backpacks and more.
To open bushcrafting menu: Equip a valid material (drag to the paper doll). You can tell a bushcrafting material by the Bushcrafting Material
flag in their tooltip.
Firewood is used for many crafting recipes. Branches spawn near trees and can be collected as firewood. Once you've crafted an axe, you can then chop trees directly to gather wood more effectively. To do so, equip an axe and swing it at a tree (or wood objects such as tree stumps) until you receive a successful harvest message. Use full swings to harvest the most efficiently.
Resin is used in a number of recipes for various purposes, such as waterproofing a waterskin, or providing fuel for a torch. To collect resin, use an axe on a living tree, and you will have a chance of harvesting resin instead of firewood.
When destroying a campfire, you now recover charcoal based on how long the fire has been burning. This is currently used to craft the Water Filter, but other uses are planned.
Flint is an important material for creating tools such as knifes, axes and pickaxes out in the wild. Flint can be mined from stone with a pickaxe, or picked up from the ground. Flint spawns rarely near rocks on the ground, or much more commonly in lakes and rivers, especially where seaweed like kelp can be found.
Plant Fibre is harvested from Vegetation, which includes both static plants such as grass and help, and plants that provide ingredients such as Kresh weed and Saltrice. To harvest plant fibre, equip a knife or other short blade and swing at a piece of vegetation with a chopping or slashing attack. Keep slashing until you get a successful harvest message. Use full swings to harvest the most efficiently.
Plant fibre is not often used as-is, but can be crafted into more useful materials such as fabric, straw and rope.
Leather is used for items such as waterskins, packpacks and tents. It is obtained by crafting a Tanning Rack and using it to convert annimal hides into leather.
Rope is used for tying together other materials. It is crafted from plant fibre.
Fabric is used for various recipes and can be crafted from plant fibre.
Straw is used for making beds, pillows and lean-tos. It can be crafted from plant fibre.
Flint tools are unique in that once they break, you can equip them again to get the option to destroy them and recover some of the materials used in crafting them.
Knives can be used to harvest plant fibre from vegetation, and is also required for carving items such as wooden bowls and cups. A flint knife requires 1 x wood
