Why the wiki? I'd rather have a faq.md or add it to the docs.

## Authorization

Also the way I was thinking about the auth faq is something more like a step by step troubleshooting guide, e.g.

  • make sure that your key is readable
  • if you are using a .json key, make sure it's a key for a service account and not for a wep app etc.

Agreed, we should keep auth in-place and add trouble-shooting guide for extra explanation and common issues / misconceptions.

I just see the wiki as a tool that we can use. It's easy to edit by us and other users, and lets us keep it out of unnecessary version control and distribution.

The troubleshooting guide makes sense, so maybe a better name for the FAQ page is "Help" (?), where it is a collection of helpful information presented in their respective ways (faq, troubleshooting, walkthroughs, w/e)

Keeping the auth in the readme is fine. I removed it because it's such a beast to read before getting to the API preview that show off why using our library is a good solution. It seems like it takes away from that by first forcing users to feel like there are many steps to follow before they can use us. By using the warning icon and moving it to the wiki, we are able to let the user know there's something that requires their attention before using gcloud, but don't overwhelmed them by dumping it all on them before they need it (after deciding the library is a great idea for their app!)

  • Are the sources of the WIKI's page available somehow?
  • What is the story for moderating access to change pages?

The idea behind the current README is to give a sequence like

  1. how to install
  2. what do you need for authentication
  3. basic snippets to use the APIs

But if we want to put the focus on the APIs first, we could move the authentication section after the APIs.

Are the sources of the WIKI's page available somehow?

Do you mean for programatically querying the contents of a page? Added you to the repo so you can play with the wiki and hopefully get the answer you're looking for on that.

What is the story for moderating access to change pages?

It's either open for all or read-only for non-contributors. With Yeoman, it definitely got annoying having to deal with the occasional "fix" a user would land that was entirely specific to their set up. And there are the hooligans who will wipe out an entire page. Revision history is kept, and reverting is a one button click (really, not even a "confirm" action is required to revert!)

I believe this library wouldn't have to worry about those, due to the distance in scopes of our projects. In fact, I'd like users to be able to submit their own use cases of gcloud without us having to act as bouncers.

The idea behind the current README is to give a sequence like

  1. how to install
  2. what do you need for authentication
  3. basic snippets to use the APIs

That's an important flow, and it should remain that way. I've still kept this in my revision-- mine just links out to another resource for step 2, so the difference is purely perception. If I see a wall of "disclaimers" before "the good stuff", it acts as a barrier. If I see "the good stuff" first, I am more likely to say "ok, sounds great! Now what do I do?"

Honestly, I'm not trying to "make a sale", I just want the readme to read better. It's huge atm with a lot of

s yelling at the reader. When I come to a new project on GH, I only give it so much of a chance before I move on. I want a readme to say what a project does, show how it's used, and link out to any other resources that help me along the way. I categorize how to authenticate as the helpful part.

RE: auth troubleshooting guide in the wiki & auth steps in the readme; as a user, I just want one place to go for auth stuff. More generally, I want one place I go for help (wiki help page).

RE: wiki vs gh-pages docs, I think gh-pages should serve as a curated representation of our library + API docs, nothing more. When a user has a tough question, or a problem, they know to come to GH/SO.

A repo's wiki is just another repo. So in theory we can do whatever the hell we want to it. But ideally we just let it flourish like a wiki should without any funny business.

I'm all for it because I've never actually seen wikis be used very well and it would be a good experience to see how it works / doesn't work for these types of projects. I wanted to originally use it for API docs for google-api-nodejs-client but I ran out of time to make it happen.

@ryanseys

@silvolu should we try the wiki or hold back and go the FAQ.md route? I think we should still have authorization in the README but only keyFile: "key.json" and automagical GCE samples, no corner cases. Storing private keys in environment variables and other strange techniques should be left for the wiki or FAQ.md

I wasn't asking with adding content in funny ways in mind; my question was more to make sure that other places (e.g. developers.google.com) would be able the get the content without scraping. And that can be done.

I believe this library wouldn't have to worry about those, due to the distance in scopes of our projects. In fact, I'd like users to be able to submit their own use cases of gcloud without us having to act as bouncers.

I don't see that as bouncers, I see it as moderator/curator. Given that this is an official Google project, the latter role becomes important.
Having the docs in .MD files or autogenerated from the sources allows external user to contribute, while moderated through a PR.

Having the docs in .MD files or autogenerated from the sources allows external user to contribute, while moderated through a PR.

The moderation can come from the wiki as well. Even though Yeoman was a bit abused, [the abuse] was small. And that's one of the most popular [Node] OSS projects currently, with thousands of sub-projects depending on it. The misuse was very, very minimal (3-4 times/month). I would be shocked if we had to deal with more than the occasional typo. Maybe we could put the open wiki on trial. If it doesn't hold up, lock it to contributors.

RE: autogenerated docs, I don't intend on the wiki having any API docs, just guides / ancillary info.

  • gh-pages: marketing landing page + API docs
  • gh-pages or wiki: guides / ancillary info
  • readme: logline, API preview, bite-size info (authors, how to contribute, links, license, etc)
  • github issues: reports of broken code on library's part
  • stackoverflow: reports of broken code on user's part

An alternative to the wiki or doc MDs would be just adding pages to the gh-pages site. Either is fine IMO, I just prefer the openness of the wiki.

I don't think this is my call so not sure how I can act on this PR. Seems like something a Google internal should make final call considering @silvolu raised issues with having publicly-editable wiki on Google-official project. Personally I don't see any issue with it because I highly doubt we will see any abuse. My only gripe is that now we would have docs in README.md + website + wiki instead of README.md + FAQ.md + website, the prior of which seems somewhat unnecessarily sporadic and convoluted.

@stephenplusplus
Copy link
Contributor Author

My guess is wiki is out because of the potential for abuse. If this is the case, I would rather have docs in one place, the website. I don't consider the README to be docs, it's an introduction to the codebase & API. The website can have:

  • Docs
  • API docs
  • FAQ

We will need some content for the Docs tab.

I'm trying to get a clear 'yes' or 'no' on this point. Please hold until I update the issue.

As discussed "offline", will be waiting until we get Google approval (or denial) of wiki before deciding on what approach to take and moving forward.

@stephenplusplus: no wiki.

So is our fallback still docs/troubleshooting.md & docs/faq.md that will be HTML-ified to /docs/#/troubleshooting and /docs/#/faq on the site?

Sounds good to me. We could add an "edit me on github" link to both documents to make more clear that we accept contributions, something like this (check the top right corner).

### [`v2.0.0`](https://togithub.com/google/gts/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md#&#8203;200-httpswwwgithubcomgooglegtscomparev112v200-2020-04-02)

[Compare Source](https://togithub.com/google/gts/compare/39a2705e51b4b6329a70f91f8293a2d7a363bf5d...v2.0.0)

##### ⚠ BREAKING CHANGES ⚠

This is a major rewrite of the tool. Based on community guidance, we've switched from using [tslint](https://palantir.github.io/tslint/) to [eslint](https://eslint.org/). _Please read all of the steps below to upgrade_.

##### Configuring `eslint`

With the shift to `eslint`, `gts` now will format and lint JavaScript _as well_ as TypeScript. Upgrading will require a number of manual steps. To format JavaScript and TypeScript, you can run:

    $ npx gts fix

To specify only TypeScript:

    $ npx gts fix '**/*.ts'

##### Delete `tslint.json`

This file is no longer used, and can lead to confusion.

##### Create a `.eslintrc.json`

Now that we're using eslint, you need to extend the eslint configuration baked into the module. Create a new file named `.eslintrc.json`, and paste the following:

```js
{
  "extends": "./node_modules/gts"
}
```

##### Create a `.eslintignore`

The `.eslintignore` file lets you ignore specific directories. This tool now lints and formats JavaScript, so it's _really_ important to ignore your build directory! Here is an example of a `.eslintignore` file:

    **/node_modules
    build/

##### Rule changes

The underlying linter was changed, so naturally there are going to be a variety of rule changes along the way. To see the full list, check out [.eslintrc.json](https://togithub.com/google/gts/blob/master/.eslintrc.json).

##### Require Node.js 10.x and up

Node.js 8.x is now end of life - this module now requires Ndoe.js 10.x and up.

##### Features

* feat: deferred client initialization (#286)

This PR includes changes from https://github.com/googleapis/gapic-generator-typescript/pull/317
that will move the asynchronous initialization and authentication from the client constructor
to an `initialize()` method. This method will be automatically called when the first RPC call
is performed.

The client library usage has not changed, there is no need to update any code.

If you want to make sure the client is authenticated _before_ the first RPC call, you can do
```js
await client.initialize();
```
manually before calling any client method.

<summary>google/gts</summary>

### [`v2.0.0`](https://togithub.com/google/gts/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md#&#8203;200-httpswwwgithubcomgooglegtscomparev112v200-2020-04-02)

[Compare Source](https://togithub.com/google/gts/compare/39a2705e51b4b6329a70f91f8293a2d7a363bf5d...v2.0.0)

##### ⚠ BREAKING CHANGES ⚠

This is a major rewrite of the tool. Based on community guidance, we've switched from using [tslint](https://palantir.github.io/tslint/) to [eslint](https://eslint.org/). _Please read all of the steps below to upgrade_.

##### Configuring `eslint`

With the shift to `eslint`, `gts` now will format and lint JavaScript _as well_ as TypeScript. Upgrading will require a number of manual steps. To format JavaScript and TypeScript, you can run:

    $ npx gts fix

To specify only TypeScript:

    $ npx gts fix '**/*.ts'

##### Delete `tslint.json`

This file is no longer used, and can lead to confusion.

##### Create a `.eslintrc.json`

Now that we're using eslint, you need to extend the eslint configuration baked into the module. Create a new file named `.eslintrc.json`, and paste the following:

```js
{
  "extends": "./node_modules/gts"
}
```

- [#&#8203;4175](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4175): Having been deprecated with a warning since v7.0.0, **`mocha.opts` is no longer supported** ([**@&#8203;juergba**](https://togithub.com/juergba))

    :sparkles: **WORKAROUND:** Replace `mocha.opts` with a [configuration file](https://mochajs.org/#configuring-mocha-nodejs).

-   [#&#8203;4260](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4260): Remove `enableTimeout()` (`this.enableTimeout()`) from the context object ([**@&#8203;craigtaub**](https://togithub.com/craigtaub))

    :sparkles: **WORKAROUND:** Replace usage of `this.enableTimeout(false)` in your tests with `this.timeout(0)`.

-   [#&#8203;4315](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4315): The `spec` option no longer supports a comma-delimited list of files ([**@&#8203;juergba**](https://togithub.com/juergba))

    :sparkles: **WORKAROUND**: Use an array instead (e.g., `"spec": "foo.js,bar.js"` becomes `"spec": ["foo.js", "bar.js"]`).

-   [#&#8203;4309](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4309): Drop support for Node.js v13.x line, which is now End-of-Life ([**@&#8203;juergba**](https://togithub.com/juergba))

- [#&#8203;4282](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4282): `--forbid-only` will throw an error even if exclusive tests are avoided via `--grep` or other means ([**@&#8203;arvidOtt**](https://togithub.com/arvidOtt))

- [#&#8203;4223](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4223): The context object's `skip()` (`this.skip()`) in a "before all" (`before()`) hook will no longer execute subsequent sibling hooks, in addition to hooks in child suites ([**@&#8203;juergba**](https://togithub.com/juergba))

-   [#&#8203;4178](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4178): Remove previously soft-deprecated APIs ([**@&#8203;wnghdcjfe**](https://togithub.com/wnghdcjfe)):
    -   `Mocha.prototype.ignoreLeaks()`
    -   `Mocha.prototype.useColors()`
    -   `Mocha.prototype.useInlineDiffs()`
    -   `Mocha.prototype.hideDiff()`

#### :tada: Enhancements

- [#&#8203;4245](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4245): Add ability to run tests in parallel for Node.js (see [docs](https://mochajs.org/#parallel-tests)) ([**@&#8203;boneskull**](https://togithub.com/boneskull))

    :exclamation: See also [#&#8203;4244](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4244); [Root Hook Plugins (docs)](https://mochajs.org/#root-hook-plugins) -- _root hooks must be defined via Root Hook Plugins to work in parallel mode_

-   [#&#8203;4304](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4304): `--require` now works with ES modules ([**@&#8203;JacobLey**](https://togithub.com/JacobLey))

- [#&#8203;4299](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4299): In some circumstances, Mocha can run ES modules under Node.js v10 -- _use at your own risk!_ ([**@&#8203;giltayar**](https://togithub.com/giltayar))

#### :book: Documentation

- [#&#8203;4246](https://togithub.com/mochajs/mocha/issues/4246): Add documentation for parallel mode and Root Hook plugins ([**@&#8203;boneskull**](https://togithub.com/boneskull))

* build: use gapic-generator-typescript v1.0.7.

This new generator will bring some changes to the generated code across all libraries, but the behavior will only change for nodejs-logging and nodejs-pubsub (those two libraries that use request batching). For other libraries, the changes should be minor (the createApiCall call is simplified) and it should be safe to merge them. Please talk to @alexander-fenster if you have any questions.
