E4L Multi-Delay

The E4L Multi-Delay is a spatialization effect that takes a mono input signal and creates a cascading delay in 3D space.

The Input control acts like an auxiliary send, and applies a gain to the mono input signal being sent to the delay lines. Note that turning down the Input knob will not cut off delay tails. The Output control applies gain to the output from the delay lines, controlling the overall level of the delayed signals.

The Heads-Up Display indicates the generated pattern of cascading delay. The Time control sets the delay time, which may operate in Time or Sync mode. When in Sync mode the delay time is set as a multiple of sixteenth notes. The Feedback control sets the amount of signal that will be returned from the output of the first delay line into the delay input. The Decay control sets an amplitude reduction that is applied to each of the delay voices.

The Azimuth control specifies the root position of the sound source. It may be specified manually in Free mode, or if set to Lock it will synchronize its value to the Azimuth setting of an E4L Source Panner device on the same track. The Spread control specifies the number of degrees apart each subsequent delay voice will be positioned.

The Voices control determines how many independent delay voices are used. Two voicing modes are offered. Spiral mode orients the voices in a spiral shape moving in one direction (positive clockwise, negative anti-clockwise). Pong mode is modeled after the concept of a stereo ping-pong delay, and creates a cascading oscillating pattern where delays spiral outwards in two opposite radials.

Envelop is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the unifying power of music through immersive listening spaces, events, and open-source spatial audio software.
