IA, UI and UX discussion

This page is for general ideas on changes and upgrades to the information architecture, user interface design and user experience design.

Search

Issues #101 and #78 are complete.

  • Recommend that search integrate a free text search capability. #1001 complete -- it searches all attributes of a task, including title, description, author, and tags, you can apply filters as well
  • Recommend that Search page retains search criteria when using the back button on a Detail Page that was accessed from the Search Results. Current behavior = resets search. Desired Behavior = retain keywords and result set.

Reconciling project edit/ project edit / opportunity edit

See issue #29 There are some inconsistencies in how you edit these three pages. We need an editing paradigm that is consistent.

I especially don't like how after you edit project, you can save changes or view project. It's not clear what the difference is between these and which option I should choose after I edit my project.

Tag creation

Tag creation is not entirely intuitive. When you type a new tag and it doesn't exist, it's not immediately clear whether you click add tag or create tag. Once you click create tag, the modal is clear. This model works, but it takes some user learning to figure it out. Is there a better way?

See issue #107

Visual Design

  • Recommend that the color treatment at the Header of a card be minimized (see Style Guide: Task Cards Mock-up at page bottom). Efficiency gain can be used for location or "owner" name or similar.
  • Recommend making icons for topics smaller to match height of text.
  • Question: is the image inclusion on a card delivering value and distinguishing enough detail of an opportunity for users to quickly discern whether its aligned with their interest?

Opportunity Madlibs UI

{April 9, 2014) I find it awkward that the description of the opportunity is the last item added through the madlib. I expected it to be the field immediately after the title. I have to consider the full description in order to select the right options for the rest of the madlibs in any case. Sandra Yeaman

{Dec 2015} We've removed the "madlibs" UI from the opportunity creation workflow, based on a significant number of complaints, observations of user behavior and usability testing. It is planned to be removed from the view pages as well.

Order of Opportunities on the Project page

(April 9, 2014) While the order the Opportunities appear on the page that list all Opportunities is controlled by which was last modified, I cannot figure out how the order of the Opportunities is determined on the Project page. It isn't chronological or reverse chronological. Some appear in reverse chronological order. Some appear in chronological order, but occasionally one is dropped into the middle of existing Opportunities. This lack of predictability makes it difficult to locate a specific Opportunity even when I know it exists. Sandra Yeaman

Skills - Required vs Not-Required

(April 9, 2014) There may be times when it is useful to list one or more skills as Required for an Opportunity, and additional skills as Not-Required or Desired. The madlibs only allow one designation for all skills. Sandra Yeaman
