Thanks Tom! Just a few comments from me. This one should probably get at least two reviewers since we want to make sure licensing wording is correct :)

I've copied their Japanese version into the PO files for equivalent passages. This is not legally binding (the full text linked is) so we have some wiggle room I think. More feedback is welcome though! |

I was also unsure on whether to translate "Software Carpentry" and "Data Carpentry" into Katakana because they're registered trade marks. https://musa-trademark.com/trademark-blog/trademark-practices-in-japan/
Of course you can trademark a katakana expression but The Carpentries has not done this in other languages than English I believe. Another option if to give Furigana? This would need to be in raw HTML I think since supporting it in markdown would require packages to be installed to the GitHub theme. Software Carpentry Data Carpentry The Tokyo mirror of CRAN does this for example. |

I think this resolves all outstanding issues. "Software Carpentry", "Data Carpentry" and "Community Initiatives" have been left romaji deliberately when referring to registered trademarks.
Most of this text is direct quotes from Legal licenses and has been migrated accordingly (see links below for sources). Credi @masamiy as co-author for finding these.
