I don't know what you mean by reference the pointer. Note that both of the type Query* and Query& are pointers from a semantic point of view. The difference lies in the syntax needed at the calling site.

Note that the second commit of this PR fixes a number of bugs and a lot of style issues that are not directly related to the change from Spec to Descriptor.
