For now I've decided to resolve #225 by updating the tutorial to explicitly set the max step size. I thought about adding automatic determination of max step size, but it feels very messy and will be annoying to maintain. As the tutorial is the primary entry point for users, hopefully this should be enough, and we can see if more issues pop up.
