Slow Hotspot Performance

I know, it's annoying. Unfortunately, IF the hotspot "works" for you (you are able to connect to the hotspot from another device and access a normal webpage like Google), then there is very little that TetherFi can control after that point.

Most speed issues are related to either your phone's data speed at the current moment, or the fact that all connections are just "slightly" slower because it's travelling through your phone device as a "middleman".

That being said, there are some settings you can adjust from TetherFi that have shown benefits for some people:

  • Make sure you are using the latest version of TetherFi (you can check for updates in the application Settings page)
  • Plug this device into power and make sure it is charging.
  • Enable the "Always Alive" tweak (disable Battery Optimizataion)
  • Try changing the Broadcast Frequency between 2.4GHz and 5GHz (some people report faster speeds on 2.4GHz)
  • Toggle Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth on and off multiple times on this device.
  • Enable "Max Performance" mode in Power Balance expert settings
    • "Max Performance" will have TetherFi accept connections immediately instead of waiting for a thread to open up.
    • This setting can potentially increase battery and memory usage if the device is handling many connections
  • Reduce the "Socket Timeout" expert setting to 10 or even 3 seconds
    • This will have the device aggressively close old connections to free up memory for active new ones
    • This setting can potentially make bad-behaving or slow websites no longer work.
  • Restart this device and/or your connecting device
