Professional Development Training

Overview

Many volunteers come into Hack for LA looking for insight on eventual job transition preparation. Although the development of technical skills is crucial to the competitive workforce, understanding how to leverage networks, and how to prepare for interviews and resumes will also be necessary for candidate success for life after HfLA. See Project Board for list of issues related to this initiative.

How?

  1. Identify areas of professional development that HfLA seeks to enhance for its volunteers. Ensure that these values are aligned with the Civic Opportunity Project One-Sheet and OKRs.
  2. Do an internal survey to the organization to understand what kinds of expertise people within HfLA currently possess (resume writing, LinkedIn curation, interview preparation etc). This survey should also confirm the areas of development that our volunteers would ultimately like to attain/refine.
  3. Identify HfLA volunteers that would like to host workshops on career development. Develop formatting and timing as ideas are refined.
  4. Document and develop slide decks that can be used throughout each volunteer cohort.

Purpose

To equip our volunteers with the skills needed to succeed in the tech space after transitioning from HfLA

Use/Application

Volunteers that have limited experience or that are making career transitions would have the option to gain insight and direction from the HfLA network as well as other external entities.

Lift

Identify volunteers within the HfLA that can host review workshops. Establish a weekly cadence for this where timeslots can be reserved. We will also need to establish external partnerships where necessary for expanded resources and training.

Pending Tasks

  • Add/assign team champion or PM
