Restore edge and face support thresholds in 3D #77171

The PR #76379 (which fixed a bug in 2D) changed some thresholds in 3D, making them too large.

This PR restores the thresholds to the previous values, while preserving the spirit of the previous PR (a code style/logic improvement in 3D). An explanatory comment is also added.
