Adds a basic config panel to the xy chart.

I'm using UUIDs for the column id generation, so that we avoid the conflicts that arise when using sequential id generators. It would be nice to use something smaller than a UUID, though, so I think that's something to be done in future iterations.

Note: This branch is based on a fork of an un-merged branch: #37030

I would appreciate it if the function order were consistent- I think generateColumnId has different ordering in different parts of this PR.

Let's do that as a separate PR, because I think the type signatures aren't aligned, and I'd rather do that after another master merge upstream.

Could you make a stronger assertion than "called once"? Could you assert that it was called with a new axis position? This applies to most of your tests here, I don't think they're strong enough.

The callback ref here is exactly what the NativeRenderer is doing- did you try that, and did it work?

Nope. I forgot we had that. I'll drop it in. The one annoying thing about that is that it requires me to explicitly define some of the type signature in the call.

Do we want to allow all operations on x? This would include stuff like "average of bytes". I would suggest starting with a reduced set of known 'good' things (in this case everything bucketed)

Currently the datasource only supports raw operations, so there are no bucketed fields. And we probably want to support raw operations in the future. I'm honestly not sure what this filter should look like. I'll add a TODO comment, though, as it is something we'll want to solve.

For the XY visualization I would expect all operations to be allowed on X, since we support numbers, strings, and booleans whether they are bucketed or not.

My point is that we don't want to allow aggregated metrics on the x axis because this will always be a single value.

Things we want on the x axis: Unaggregated (raw) numbers, strings and dates, bucketed numbers, strings and dates

Things we don't want on the x axis: Metric aggregations on numbers, strings and dates.

The meta information isBucketed is not sufficient to differentiate these two classes, so we need something else here. I don't have a good proposal yet, maybe wording these things to make clear they are hints by the datasource which don't have to be followed?

A raw document value (or a column from a user specified SQL query) which the datasource doesn't know anything about would simply contain no hints (except for the case we got cardinality informations because the user opened the "metrics" popover in the field list).

But this is clearly out of scope for this PR, if you think we should discuss this further I can branch it out in a separate issue.

I'm not sure... what would that do for a line / bar? It doesn't seem like something we'd want, but I may be missing something obvious?

Example within the flights dataset: Average time of departure by airport. But the more I think about it the weirder it gets, we can add these edge cases later

It's not really supported by elastic-charts yet, so it's actually safer to not allow bucketed columns on the Y axis.

My comment was not about bucketed values on the Y axis but metrics based on dates. The current editor can do it:

But I agree that we can add this later, better start with a smaller, but consistent and working set of features and expand step by step instead of pushing out a lot of half finished stuff.

I know it's still used in a lot of places but injectI18n is deprecated and should not be used anymore (reference #27968 ). I forgot to mention this when we talked about it offline, sorry.

The linked issue describes how it should be done.

I think the key you've chosen here is confusing, shouldn't it be legendPositionLabel?

Also, why are you using label on all of these keys?

Hm. It should be "ButtonLabel" probably. There's already a legendPositionLabel. As for why I'm using "label", it's the naming convention in the guidelines: packages/kbn-i18n/GUIDELINE.md

Ah. Nope. You understood perfectly. Originally, this responsibility belonged to the visualization, but then we decided to move it into the data-source. This is vestigial....
