A lot of these snapshot-oriented tests are hard to read for me because I have to correlate with another file. It seems like there is a limited set of "important" fields in the state that you could extract with a test helper, and it would be really helpful for keeping these assertions meaningful. I would expect for example, that you would care about:
- x accessor
- y accessors
- split accessors
- series accessors
- seriesType
One possible approach would be to write a test helper here like getAssertionPropsFromState(state) and then you could do something like:

I both agree and disagree. I think the snapshot tests are really handy and convenient, and allow us to easily see when anything changes in the output, thus catching unintentional changes. Intentional changes that cause breaks are trivial to adjust (type "u" in the terminal, and Jest updates the snapshots), and then you can diff to make sure the new snapshots look right. I think we should keep them.
I do agree with the downside of them living in an external file, though. I wish Jest would inline them as JS string literals or something similar. But I understand why it doesn't.

The variable naming and comment here are confusing me. I think you are actually looking for something like "there is at least one numeric column", right?

I'm looking for: "There are at least 2 columns (so we can have an x and y) and at least one is numeric (for y)." Definitely open to suggestions about how to make it clearer.

Yeah. I was wondering what we should do in that case. At first, I thought we should throw an exception, but I thought better of it. We could just default any unknown types to be left of 'number' in the list. Thoughts?

Another possibility would be to bail out and not suggest anything if there are unknown columns, because the result might probably not be what the user expects.

Hm. It's tough. I lean towards suggesting something, since suggestions will probably be the most common way users get into a chart. Even if we suggest something slightly wonky, they can correct it, or we can file a bug and fix it explicitly... Not sure. @wylieconlon thoughts?

Hm, I see what you mean. But in some cases the results could not make sense at all Example: the user pulls in a geo field and the datasource suggests geogrid on the geo field and count as a metric. The xy chart will happily try to display the geogrid value on the x axis which will probably render something like “[object Object]” as labels because there are geoobjects in the datatable. Maybe we are OK with that, not sure

I'm also in favor of not making a suggestion unless the visualization understands all parts of it. We don't want to be like Clippy and make bad suggestions, so it's better to return only good suggestions.

Suggestion: For now XYArgs is the same as the state of the visualization, but it might not stay like this. What about having a type alias here which is used for suggestion building etc.? type XYState = XYArgs;

I'm OK with an alias. My thought was that we'd create a specific state type when the time comes, and only if we need it, rather than starting out with it. But maybe an alias is the right course of action?

I like an alias because if we have it in there from the start it's very easy to add more stuff the state later. When we don't have it, we have to go through all the files and figure out whether it's the args or the state. Not super important though, I was just confused by a VisualizationSuggestion<XYArgs>

A general question: If a datasource doesn't use aggregations but just fields of documents, this visualization wouldn't produce any suggestions, because Is this intentional? Do we want to handle this somehow differently? Because it probably makes sense to have an xy chart on raw values. |

Ah, missed that one @chrisdavies , nice. There might be some edge cases where this logic doesn't hold anymore (e.g. having a data table with two metric aggregation values, so just a single row), but they are probably not relevant right now and we can look into those later if they become a problem. |

The comment and implementation here are still not quite in sync. I suggested using .some instead of .find because all you care about is whether there exists a numeric column- this doesn't check whether it's on the Y axis at all, it just validates that there is a number column.
I would suggest removing all the comments:

I'm also in favor of not making a suggestion unless the visualization understands all parts of it. We don't want to be like Clippy and make bad suggestions, so it's better to return only good suggestions.
