IIRC the advantage of vl over just tabs was that it always aligned things neatyl in columns. On OSX / Linux, there's a column command that works nicely that I used originally, but switched to vl when I was working on windows, since node.js is cross platform.

lemme spend a day to see if there's a way to get nice columns, multi-platform support, and no node.js dependencies
