Welcome to the Computing Wiki!
The purpose of this document is to outline the general steps that researchers in the Department of Bacteriology, and those interested in bioinformatics at UW-Madison, can follow to take advantage of the shared computing infrastructure at UW-Madison. While such servers provide immense computing power, it can be intimidating to get started depending on the researcher’s prior experience. This wiki serves as a reference guide for some of the general skills and concepts to become more independent with computing.
Most of this guide assumes that the researcher will use CHTC's High Throughput Computing (HTC) servers for running analyses. That said, a lot of the concepts, skills about planning a bioinformatics project and/or workflows are applicable regardless of the server you run these on.
The bigger picture, such as the ability to plan a bioinformatics project, understand how it can be broken down into smaller, realistic steps, know how to connect to the remote server, "submit jobs" and manage data are transferrable skills.
Use the navigation bar to read more about each learning module.
