- What: Geoportal Toolkit Extension User Group
- When: 14 July 2010
- Marten started the meeting with a brief discussion and presentation about the con terra/Esri INSPIRE solution for SDI in Europe. The goals of INSPIRE (actually a legal framework) are:
- share geodata harmonized across Europe;
- provide a baseline to support future development; and
- align with the needs of individual countries.
- The vision was to use ArcGIS as a foundation to deliver an extensible INSPIRE solution. Marten's question to the group: how does this solution fit with the development of the North American Profile?
- The Geoportal extension v10 has a richer configurablility of CSW endpoints (and now supports OGC CSW ISO AP). It supports a federated search as part o fits distributed catalog management.
- The Esri SDI Solution for INSPIRE includes products from con terra, such as the fusionCenter (an extension to ArcGIS Server) a set of INSPIRE data models. In addition to the SDI Solution for INSPIRE con terra also has products for license management (licenseManager) and security management (securityManager) of web services. The licenseManager operates two ways, by checking:
- does the user have a license, and
- is the license currently available?
- Question from the group: Extensions to Web APIs? Answer: v10 includes Flex, Java, etc.
- Marten mentioned the availability of the New Geoportal extension Resource Center (a direct response to request made during the last Geoportal extension user group meeting) The resource center is located at http://resources.arcgis.com/content/geoportal-extension/10.0/about
- Question from the group: Can I use an external authentication system? Answer: Yes, but you might have to do some extra configuration.
- Comment from the group: This has been a general problem, as government won't expose their authentication systems to the internet.
- Response comment from group: EPA has done this by utilizing the VPN, DMZ technologies
- FGDC will be nominating both ISO 19110 (feature catalogs) and 19119 (services) as a group in the Fall.
- There will be a NOAA transform coordination meeting on Tuesday, July 20 (more information here: www.ncddc.noaa.gov/technology/metadataandxml/view)
- EPA, NOAA, DOI, DHS and other agencies have been working closely on various Geospatial Platform efforts over the past few months. The Geospatial Platform Roadmap was just finalized and submitted to OMB for final approval this week.
- One outstanding question is: what does this mean for Data.gov? they are both tightly related, but the metadata in Data.gov is too light for the needs of the GIS community.
- There is also a need for a repository of non-Federal data (such as states, local governments, etc.)
- Using the Geoportal extension as a strategic way to tackle SDI in Abu Dhabi
- Focused on eight organizations within the Emirate, who all used Geoportal extension as a 'test'
- Positive experience for getting support for the SDI at highest levels
- Three capabilities: discovery, metadata editor, viewer
- Viewer built on Flex, which can be downloaded from Geoportal extension resources website
- Geoportal extension 10 will be released on August 20, until then, community can help by visiting the resource center and 'playing in the sandbox' - http://gptogc.esri.com.
