I now stand corrected. I have done nothing, but it is now working.

It would not surprise me if there is YouTube f**kery about.

Thank you for you work and quick responses.

Installed the latest update 5 mins ago. Videos worked ok before installing (never mind the jittering on 4k60fps hdr), now every video is unplayable with " Unkonwn Source Error, Response Code:403 "; Philips TV Android 8.0

Tried everything after updating to 26.11. First got 403 error on every video at start, then at about 1 minute in. Videos also stopped playing in YouTube app, but were playing fine on computer in browser, Finally tried rebooting my FireTV and it fixed it.

Rebooting my Shield didn't work, nor did deleting cache or data, so I did a complete uninstall and reinstall and its better than ever.

Yes this issue is still present, every videos now unplayable and shows 403 error. Using official app for a while until the new release!

Yeah, a reinstall didn't last long, but the latest updates pushed today are an improvement. Waiting for the fix mostly works (not always) after a wait.

Wont work but today even our youtube app keeps stopping and saying something went wrong with a qr code.

Same issue on Nvidia Shield, both Stable & Beta releases (latest ones). Similar to @Saint8252, even the regular YouTube app stopped working, on Nvidia Shield and on the Samsung TV directly too. Phones & Computers seem unaffected.

Surprisingly all videos are now playing without any 403 error and please sign in issue with some vidoes have also resolved. @yuliskov Any background updates pushed up?

Tried rebooting, cleared cache , signed in and out, tried stable and beta, tried different engines. No luck. 403 for 10-15mins then eventually plays then the next video will do the same

I'm on Google Chromecast 4K. Both stable 26.11 and beta 26.23 gets 403 error.

The video plays initially, but starts getting the error when it tries to buffer more of the video. Starting the video then skipping past the initial buffer results in the same error.

Tried the official YouTube app and it errors out the same way (no error code) for the first video, but then plays all videos since, so not sure if related.

Edit: YouTube official app is erroring out as well.

I've tried signing-out/back in as well as deleting all the "data" in settings of both the stable and beta versions of the app. I haven't tried reinstalling.

Edit: Tried reinstalling both stable and beta versions to no avail. Updated to 26.25 and the issue is still present but now videos eventually play after waiting for a few rounds (a minute or two) of error 403. Still far from a usable experience, though.

I have the same error.
Both Smarttube and youtube official app.
If offcial youtube app have same problem with smarttube , I think the problem is on youtube server side.

Yeah even offical youtube app is showing "something went wrong try again"

I think it's from youtube side not smarttube

The official app starts to have that error after a while when smarttube starts having errors or is installed, I'm not sure yet as errors have been showing up all the time. I have yet to try .26 but with any previous release, I had errors after while. The only way I fixed official youtube is to uninstall and re-install. Clear data didn't work for me. I'm on a shield tv 2019 if it's important

So I think it problem from youtube side.

Its not the youtube side. I get the something went wrong on the official app but with Smart tube Stable 25.87 most videos will play perfectly. At first I will get the 403 error a few seconds in on the first video I play but after that most videos will play from start to finish no problem with a few showing the please sign in thing

@yukichigai

Alright, 24 hours later and 26.11 stable is working just fine. So... yeah, not sure what that means.

NVidia Shield, never had this 403 error much before but since the 26.11 update was installed a few days ago it's been almost constant. Every video. Here's the thing though, it only does it when i'm on my VPN! If I bypass it, all fine. Turn it back on, it returns. For me at least, there is definitely something going on with network connections through VPN. Anyone else found this?

@larryvgs

larryvgs commented Feb 19, 2025

I think the initial 403 error all the time was YouTube's fault as all the videos were also crashing about one minute into the video in the YouTube app as well. I use a VPN as well, and here is what I have done to minimize the 403 error or make it go away completely.

  1. Reboot your device
  2. Choose a different or closer VPN location
  3. In the SmartTube app go to Settings - Player - Video buffer - Put on High or Highest
  4. In Settings - Player - Video presets - Change from Without preset to the top option. Then if you keep having the 403 problem, keep moving down one until it goes away.

Hope that helps.

Update 2/19/25: This morning it started happening again, and my first two steps did not resolve it this time and once again I got the error about one minute in and it also failed once again in the YouTube app. I turned off the VPN and it played in both. I turned the VPN back on, and it once again played in both. So it appears to be a YouTube and VPN issue. So try turning your VPN off and then back on.

Prepared another build addressed 403 error but it's VERY UNSTABLE. Try it only if videos are fully unplayable.

Is there a way to switch to / from the beta in the app? It's just more work when you're using Android TV compared to mobile. If not, can you consider adding a way?

I no longer see error 403 or please login with this build. Thank you for your hard work. Theres two more problems. I am using a Homatics Box R 4k Plus and Smart Tube is showing multiple instances of Smart Tube open in both the stable and Beta builds. It shows between 3 to 6 instances of the app open. The second issue is I am no longer seeing animated thumbnails.

I forgot to mention my Homatics Box R 4K Plus is on Android 14. When it was on Android OS 11 and Android OS 12 Smart Tube was only launching one instance. But with Android 14 Its launching 3 to 6 instances of the app.
