Dear @SibylleK and Sebastian ECMWF is producing "mixed layer depth" using several criteria. My understanding is that there are several ways to defined the mixed layer depth based on temperature difference, water density difference, diffusivity difference. Which criteria is used in your case? In any case we encode our mixed layers using the generic water depth parameter together with entries 169 to 172 in code table 4.5, then specify the relevant value of the threshold using scale factor and scaled value associated with the fixed surface. |

DWD request a new oceanographic parameter for Code table 4.2.
It is planned to output the mixed layer depth for the ocean following definition criterions as defined, for instance, in S.M. Griffies et al, 2016: "OMIP contribution to CMIP6: experimental and diagnostic protocol for the physical component of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project", Geosci. Model Dev., 9, 3231–3296, https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-9-3231-2016 .
