First PR generated by https://github.com/vercel/turbopack-resolved-vc-codemod (private repo, hacky low-quality throw-away code)

The codemod is only able to "fix" compilation errors by rewriting function arguments as ResolvedVc, so it's very limited right now, but it's able to make some progress.

The codemod uses ast-grep's JS API to make all the changes: https://ast-grep.github.io/guide/api-usage/js-api.html

I also evaluated gritql, but it didn't seem sufficient for this codemod: Internal discussion

It turns out that a lot of these structs are actually dead code, so #70987 is a follow-up to delete them.

I had to hand-fix this. The script incorrectly thought it's modification was correct because this function is gated behind #[cfg(feature = "plugin")].

This is the only "fix" that the codemod script currently knows how to apply: rewriting function arguments.

I also evaluated gritql, but it didn't seem sufficient for this codemod: Internal discussion

Hi @bgw! I hope you don't mind me popping in, but I'd love to understand what didn't work for you. The GritQL engine is substantially more powerful than ast-grep so anything you're doing here should be possible. If you share the ast-grep rule I'd also be happy to show you the Grit equivalent.

Oh, wow! Hi @morgante! One of the complicated things I'm trying to do is run cargo check --message-format=json between changes, parsing those error messages, and trying to fix things, and so I felt like I needed ast-grep's JS API for that.

However, here's my evaluation that I wrote up internally. I wasn't initially planning on sharing this, so apologies if things are a little harsh.

  • I think it has a ton of promise. The fundamental premise is better than ast-grep. You can embed wasm-sandboxed (it's totally safe to run arbitrary gritql you find on the web!) JS functions for certain operations. They're doing some novel and very good things here.

  • For a tool like this, you really need a good editor experience that shows you matches on test code as you edit the query. The GritQL "Studio" is so bad that it pretty much single-handedly kills the product for me. It makes it really hard to view the AST by putting it in a tiny window that dismisses itself whenever the code is modified. ast-grep's "playground" is relatively simple, but leagues more usable than what gritql has.

  • Some patterns that are easily represented in ast-grep don't seem possible to represent in gritql. E.g. they don't have a way of matching against the nth unnamed child inside of a tree-sitter node. I'm sure they can fix this with time, but it's just immature compared to ast-grep.

  • Their syntax has some confusingly rough edges. E.g. they have a really nice log function (which ast-grep lacks!), but it can't take an arbitrary expression. It can only accept a variable identifier. So you end up needing to assign an expression to a variable before you can pass it into log.

  • GritQL's "limit" feature seems nice, but half-baked. There's no way to get it to skip over some work that we know isn't easily auto-fixed (based on previous attempts).

  • The whole product seems to be designed for non-power-users, pushing you heavily towards their pre-made "pattern library" (similar to codemod.com's registry), none of which is useful to me. E.g. their syntax errors have baked into them a very long and obnoxious "If you hit this error while running grit apply on a pattern from the Grit standard library..." message

  • The parser for their DSL (which unsurprisingly uses tree-sitter) doesn't give good error messages. Mostly just generic "Error at line/column". Sounds like biome has a (probably better?) non-tree-sitter parser for the DSL that might get integrated more deeply in the future.

  • Their (open source) CLI is completely non-functional unless you log in with your github account (free, but annoying). They have enterprise features this makes sense for, but it should not be a requirement for basic use as I'm not using any of their cloud functionality. Their cloud/enterprise services are high-touch ("book a demo"/"contact us"), so this doesn't even seem to make much business sense.

  • Their docs are overall worse. They have references to legacy functionality like multiple "engines" (apparently this isn't a thing anymore, but they were rewriting their engine from JS to Rust at some point).

Overall, I'm given up on gritql, and I'm mostly using ast-grep's nodejs API now instead. I think it would be worth trying again in 6-12 months once they have things more fleshed out.

Thanks for posting. Would also have loved if you reached out to me during your evaluation, we have an active Discord and I think some of these might be misconceptions.

Do you have an example of this? As far as I know every AST grep pattern can be represented in GritQL.

GritQL's "limit" feature seems nice, but half-baked. There's no way to get it to skip over some work that we know isn't easily auto-fixed (based on previous attempts).

How would you do this with ast-grep? I would typically recommend adding a side condition.

Fair enough, we've underinvested in the studio largely because I found most power users gravitate to the IDE or CLI. I personally heavily use our VS Code extension for authoring.

Their docs are overall worse. They have references to legacy functionality like multiple "engines" (apparently this isn't a thing anymore, but they were rewriting their engine from JS to Rust at some point).

This is surprising to me, as our docs are much more extensive than ast-grep. Would love to know what you found confusing/missing.

This is not true. The vast majority of our CLI users never log in - log in is not required to run local patterns or patterns from the standard library. Not sure why you thought it was.

I think that's great. Unfortunately, while I do use Discord at home, I don't have it installed on my work computer.

Some patterns that are easily represented in ast-grep don't seem possible to represent in gritql. E.g. [...] nth unnamed child inside [...]

Do you have an example of this? As far as I know every AST grep pattern can be represented in GritQL.

I couldn't figure out how to represent a query like this.

I'm using a query similar to this because my codemod script first generates a list of "work items", and then tries processing them later. That requires that I find the nth child of ordered_field_declaration_list to update. The nth child query can also be important in processing rust macros, where you end up with token tree nodes.

I also noticed this issue while attempting to convert some logic from ast-grep. You can restructure things not to need that, but since ast-grep has the equivalent, it can make 1:1 ports harder.

GritQL's "limit" feature seems nice, but half-baked. There's no way to get it to skip over some work that we know isn't easily auto-fixed (based on previous attempts).

Yeah, you can't with vanilla ast-grep. My situation is very complicated as I'm trying to process compiler output as part of the codemod.

I'm doing this myself using ast-grep's Node.js API by creating json files with "finished" or "skipped" work items, where each work item is a combination of the file path, the struct/enum name/variant, and the field name.

I'm not really sure what a generalized solution would look like.

Their docs are overall worse. They have references to legacy functionality like multiple "engines" [...]

This is surprising to me, as our docs are much more extensive than ast-grep. Would love to know what you found confusing/missing.

I think the documentation overall is good (honestly, it's better in a lot of ways than what we have for turbopack...), it was just worse for me than the ast-grep docs were. Some of this could just come down to needing to learn a new syntax as well as the pattern matching features. Some of this might just me coming from using ast-grep first and preferring it's way of doing things as a result.

A few things:

  • I like the way ast-grep divides their docs between the "guide" and "reference". The gritql "getting started" feels more like a reference for the CLI's options than a guide. If feels like there's a reference for the DSL, but no guide.
  • I think "Pattern Modifiers" could be split into "composite" and "relational" modifiers, like astgrep does.
  • I'm not sure why, but ast-grep's doc search seemed slightly easier for me to navigate than grit's?

Their (open source) CLI is completely non-functional unless you log in with your github account [...]

This is not true. The vast majority of our CLI users never log in - log in is not required to run local patterns or patterns from the standard library. Not sure why you thought it was.

I don't remember exactly what I did, but I ran into the login prompt and assumed it was mandatory. If it's not, I'm happy to hear that.

Another manual fix due to conditional compilation: When this feature isn't enabled (on some platforms?) the import was seen as unused, so we have to use the fully qualified name instead to avoid the lint warning.

**This is a** *(mostly)* **machine-generated PR.**

This uses a much updated version of the ast-grep based codemod script from #70927, which can now match a bunch more patterns.

Codemod scripts: https://github.com/vercel/turbopack-resolved-vc-codemod/tree/90518e64cfaf9328546ff4688692f16f54d4fc3e

I did a small bit of cleanup after running the script with:

```bash
sg -U --pattern '$OBJ.resolve().await?.to_resolved().await?' -r '$OBJ.to_resolved().await?'
```

Notable additions since last time are:
- Runs the compiler/fixer in a loop a few times, as fixing an issue often allows compilation to get further, creating new errors.
- Can apply compiler-suggested edits (usually these are manual derefs needed with `*`)
- Knows how to rewrite `$OBJ.cell()` to `$OBJ.resolved_cell()`
- Knows how to rewrite `Vc::cell($ARG)` to `ResolvedVc::cell($ARG)`
- Knows how to rewrite `$TYPE::cell($ARG)` to `$TYPE::resolved_cell($ARG)`.
- Knows how to add `.to_resolved().await?` to expressions.

…3) (#71665)

Generated using a version of https://github.com/vercel/turbopack-resolved-vc-codemod using Anthropic Claude Sonnet 3.5 (`claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022`) for more complicated errors we don't have hardcoded logic for.

- Part 1: #70927
- Part 2: #71172

I kept running the script until I ran out of tokens (the tier 1 rate limit is 1M input tokens). I'll keep improving how I'm calling the LLM (there's still a lot of room for improvement from my side), and try running it again tomorrow to fix more things.

This fixes 13 struct field types. There are still 271 struct fields remaining that need to be codemodded.
