It is time to preinstall HBase (w/o starting it on boot), the same way we do for Neo4J and ElasticSearch. I am not entirely sure what version it needs to be, Hadoop ecosystem version numbering does not exactly make sense.

Looks like this PPA is right on the money.

Init.d script is not there yet but the cookbook is ready.

The recipe (hbase::cdh4) is ready. However, Cloudera only provides 12.04 64 bit packages so we will be able to use it after we move to 12.04 and then 64 bit VMs. But I am pretty happy with hbase::cdh4, it has an init.d script and provisions are recent version of HBase (0.92.1).

Cloudera provide its own repositories for ubuntu (only amd64 too) http://archive.cloudera.com/cdh4/ubuntu/ seams more up to date with CDH4.1 than ppa ?
