Hi @tobyhodges , are you still working on this? It reads nicely, but I think the argument of why it's better to retain RSEs instead of replacing them with younger, cheaper ones, could still be a bit strengthened...

Maybe we can remove "This might be even more true for RSEs than traditional researchers as RSEs may have more opportunities to perform similar activities in the commercial sector, while benefitting from better salaries and working conditions."

I am not sure this comment for "traditional researchers" is true. At least in some domains, "traditional researchers" fit well in industry when there are department for innovation, research and development.

Also, I am not sure the commercial sector can (always) offer "better working conditions". I would rather avoid that generalization. I have seen cases where it is not true.

The best RSEs continue to develop their skills and knowledge through experience
well beyond the end of any formal training,
and strengthen collaborative relationships and institutional knowledge over time.

Long employed, experienced RSEs strengthen collaborative relationships and institutional knowledge over time.

From a RSE-center I have heard the claim, that projects applying for funding that have RSE support, are much more likely to get funding.
I am not sure, if this is a point to be made here, since an advantage everybody has, is no comparative advantage anymore.

This is worked out somewhere else, and would require some policy support like e.g. software management plans.

I am not sure the sentence " until they eventually self give expert trainings to younger RSEs." is true. Not all experienced RSEs will want to provide training. Maybe "to a point where they could, for instance, give expert training or mentoring younger RSEs, or facilitate advancement of RSE as a field."

I can see the linguistical impreciseness.
The group of young RSEs will become senior RSEs and they will give the expert training (who else?). Speaking of the group as a whole. Of course not all want to or will provide training.
I would like to express that these persons are those, that will give the training. Would rephrasing it to "until some of them eventually themselves give expert trainings..." help?
