Steps to reproduce

  1. Downloaded Linux version from https://desktop.telegram.org/
  2. started it
  3. pressed "Start messaging"
  4. "Or log in using your phone number" (as I am not logged in anywhere)
  5. entered my phone number
  6. pressed "next"
  7. pressed "Send code via SMS"

Expected behaviour

SMS arrives OR I get message that makes sense

Actual behaviour

screen02

how I am supposed to receive that if I am not logged in anywhere?

info about registration is not helping as I registered already

are people who ever logged out on all devices unable to log in ever again?

is login via SMS removed completely? If yes, then why "Send code via SMS" exists?

Operating system

Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS

Version of Telegram Desktop

4.5.3

Installation source

Static binary from official website

Per #16153 it seems deliberately broken for some reason - in such case why desktop app even has login via SMS instead of "you are unable to login here" message?

As workaround I was able to use https://kotatogram.github.io/ to loging and let people know that I am not using Telegram anymore.

You can upvote https://bugs.telegram.org/c/4239 to request fixing root issue (it will be likely ignored anyway).

No idea why I cannot login via password like in any other place, is it attempt to force people to install app?

So, broken and misleading message is going to stay?

If Telegram is making app mandatory - at least make this clear in an error message.
