Hi, I'm Takumi Sueda, a.k.a puhitaku. I like all the stuff regarding computers, especially those in lower layers. I'm currently based in Tokyo (close to Akihabara for grabbing exciting junks!), working for closed development in half a week and doing reverse-engineering and open developments in the rest.

The active topics I'm currently working on are namely:

1. Port Linux to SHARP Brain (an e-dictionary sold in Japan)
2. Develop mtplvcap, a software that turns Nikon DSLRs into a webcam

1. Port Linux to SHARP Brain

I got the first Brain in 2010, and I was a kiddie then. Although I noticed it runs on top of generic ARM SoCs, I had neither experience nor knowledge to port Linux.

Almost a decade later, in 2019, I finally made it happen! My dream really came true, but it was still not enough for daily use; it had no drivers, even for displays.

I've successfully gained public interest in Brain Linux later. I've opened a GitHub Org, Discord server, and wrote blog entries. Getting a pre-built Linux image is made easy thanks to GitHub Actions, and some folks successfully ran it on their Brain and shared their feelings on SNS.

Now I'm confident that Brain Linux is an exciting topic for computer lovers. Since I don't want this project to end up as an "unusable hobby project," improving it and supporting more Brains like historical models (including my first Brain PW-GC610 too!) are mandatory.

So here's what I need your help. Being a sponsor will allow me to focus on what I should work on and purchase unsupported models.

My goal is to release a ready-to-burn image like Raspberry Pi did. This will gain interest more than before, and eventually, attract computer kiddies like me in childhood and give them a toy computer to begin programming.

2. Develop mtplvcap

A terrible pandemic is going underway since 2020. This changed the lives of all human beings and forced us to shut ourselves in our house. As an effect, "working remotely" rapidly became major. Colleagues talk via chat services. I also work remotely every day.

Early 2020, I noticed that buying a Webcam is so hard; no shops had a sufficient amount of cameras. They ran really short and somewhat expensive. So I decided to develop software to make my Nikon DSLR a Webcam and released mtplvcap in July 2020.

Simultaneously, Nikon officially released a similar utility, Webcam Utility, that supports only 19 models (Version 1.0.1). Other models DO have the ability (MTP) to become a Webcam. I was so frustrated and decided to improve mtplvcap to overcome WU.

Beating a bug to add supported cameras is a journey. Because I don't have Nikons other than D5300, I can only "infer" what and how it is going wrong, reading GitHub issues.

1. 電子辞書 SHARP Brain への Linux 移植

2010年、私が高専に入るときに初めて電子辞書 Brain を手に入れました。汎用な ARM SoC が載っていることや、Linux を動かすポテンシャルを有することはバラして早々に気付きましたが、当時は技術もないキッズだったため何もできませんでした。

時は経って2019年、様々な困難を乗り越えて Linux 移植が実現しました。かつて描いた夢は叶ったわけですが、移植直後は画面すら映らず、通常使用にはまったく耐えられませんでした。

その後、移植成功についてブログやプレゼンで発表し、注目を浴びる事になりました。これを契機に GitHub Org を立ち上げ、Discord サーバーも開きました。GitHub Actions に載せたおかげで、コンパイルされた Linux のバイナリを誰でも簡単に手に入れられるようにもなりました。

電子辞書への Linux 移植というトピックは、コンピューター好きにはさぞたまらない話題になったであろうと確信しています。ここまで来たからには「まるで使えない趣味プロジェクト」に終わらせるつもりはなく、より多くの機種（かつての私の盟友 PW-GC610 もそうです）への移植や、まだ動作しないハードウェアへのドライバ実装を進めていきたいと考えています。

思い描いているゴールは、Raspberry Pi のように SD にそのまま焼いてそのまま起動できるイメージをリリースすることです。こうすることで Brain がもっと注目されるはずですし、そしてゆくゆくは、かつての僕のようなコンピューター好きのキッズたちをプログラミングへいざなうようなおもちゃにできると思っています。

2. Nikon のカメラを Web カメラにできる mtplvcap の開発

2020年の世界的なパンデミックにより、我々の生活は一変しました。家に引きこもることを余儀なくされ、リモートワークが急激にメジャーになり、同僚とはビデオチャットで会話するようになりました。

2020年初頭当時、Web カメラは買いたくてもまるで買えませんでした。そこで、持っていた D5300 を Web カメラにすることを思いつき、7月には mtplvcap をリリースすることができました。ほぼ同時に Nikon も Webcam Utility をリリースしましたが、たったの19機種しかサポートしておらず非常にがっかりしました。他の機種も Web カメラになれる能力があるにもかからわずです。かくして、WU の完全上位互換になるソフトウェアを目指してやろう！と心に決め、現在も開発を続けています。

私の手元には D5300 が1台しかありません。Issue に動作しない機種の報告が上がると、対応は困難を極めます。スポンサーしていただくことで、この課題に立ち向かう体力を得て、カメラをレンタルで借りたりできるようになります。ご支援をいただけると幸いです。
