Documentation: Scope explanation

I think the documentation needs to be updated or have a section about the scope parameter. It's explained really loosely under the {assign} function. But havn't been able to find it else where:

You can assign a variable to root of the current root tree. The variable is seen by all templates using the same root tree.

It would also be nice to know what the default scope is.
