It's not desirable for the base repo to automatically assign copyright to a named holder who may not be the actual correct copyright holder, since the developer who makes use of the base may forget to change the license. A placeholder string is better because it leaves less moral/legal ambiguity as to the intent of the base repo (it is not the intent to wrongfully steal copyright).
