08_Project_Roadmap
Currently, the focus of the ESOS project is high performance block-level storage. The ESOS Linux distribution is extremely light and fast. At some point in the future we will likely have to morph into a unified storage platform in order to compete, but at this time, we're going to keep doing what we're good at: Simple, fast enterprise storage.
Currently our primary UI for managing ESOS arrays is our beloved TUI (text-based user interface). The TUI is simple, and light, however, we don't deny a web interface would yield a UI that provides greater information to the user, and allow us to better illustrate performance and metrics (graphs, etc.). It would also likely greatly increase the popularity of our platform. The search is underway to find a web framework that is worthy to be included with ESOS. The TUI would continue to exist, yet in a limited manor with system configuration tasks only (eg, network, date/time, etc.).
Object-based storage options are also likely in the future. This seems to be all the rage these days, so we might as well embrace it. Its unlikely that Samba (SMB/CIFS) will ever make its way into the project, as it brings a lot of bulk. Adding NFS should be trivial though.
We welcome new ideas for ESOS as well as any developers looking to join the ESOS project and contribute.
ESOS is used in many different ways, and in various shapes or forms. Some use ESOS as a simple backup target/dump location via iSCSI, others use dual-head (HA) ESOS arrays, with high-end SAS SSD's that have replaced their entire proprietary SAN disk arrays. We have users which are enthusiasts and might use ESOS in their home lab. And we also have people using ESOS in corporate data center environments, college campuses, movie/TV studios, and just about any other industry you can think of.
We have a strong, yet quiet following. ESOS -- it's stable, solid, fast, and it just works. Many of our community members are on the esos-users Google Group. Please join us! We're happy to answer any questions you might have, or assist you with any problems.
