slider plots in notebooks

variables that depend on space aren't updating with the slider in notebooks, but work ok if you just run the scripts

seems like this is just extreme lag on my computer. maybe we should change the defaults so that it doesn’t try to update when sliding in notebooks or something else to avoid this?

Definitely has got slower recently. Might be worth trying a git bisect.
