Non-functioning anyway.

Remove deprecation warnings about HBox, VBox and HPaned. Use more expressive widgets ids for boxes and panes

Remove unused
external.pyor currently nonfunctional stuff (desktop/idle)that should be moved to a companion project, as discussed in #493.
