The biggest difficulty in this issue is that we want the handshake generation and validation to be asynchronous. The main objective of this issue isn't really to check whether a handshake is valid or not, but more to accept/deny the substream based on the context, and if you can't even do any asynchronous operation then you're very limited. Also, ideally, you could generate a different handshake based on the context and the peer, instead of sending the same handshake all the time. |
Can we not move the generation and validation of handshakes to the specific notification protocol implementation? |
I didn't catch that sentence, but the reason why it's not in use is because it's not possible. If it was, we'd clearly use this feature. Making this possible is the entire point of the issue. |
But moving the validation to the notification protocol should be fairly simple or not? (I mean I don't know the exact details) But can you not put the handshake alongside the connected (or whatever the name is) event? |
I think this scheme would make it asynchronous as the handshake would be sent to the protocol for validation and result of the validation would basically be that the substream is kept open or it's closed.
Could you elaborate on this? This scheme would allow the protocol to update the handshake bytes and that is what the block announcement protocol is currently doing by calling
It is possible but it's not very useful, like it could check if the handshake contains some protocol-defined magic bytes. I was playing around with some code that would make this function asynchronous so @bkchr yes we can and that is what I'm proposing here |

This is not very useful, as the remote will believe that it has been accepted while it has in reality been denied. What is the remote supposed do if it has already started sending notifications? The objective of this issue isn't to check an arbitrary checkmark "is the handshake configurable?". The objective is to make things properly, and making it properly involves making the handshake configurable, which is why the issue has been opened.
If I remember correctly, the collation protocol currently sends a second handshake (they don't call it like that, but it's effectively a second handshake) after the substream has been opened precisely because it isn't possible to customize the actual handshake. |
I looked into the implementation and what seems to happen, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that peer opens a substream, that gets validated on remote side and it's either accepted (the initiator is not informed) or it is rejected and the substream is closed. This proposal just moves the decoding of bytes to the actual protocol implementation and if it fails there, it protocol is closed just the same way. The decision whether to keep the substream open or closed is moved up in the stack and handshake bytes are modified to contain whatever the protocol wants, |
The substream is accepted by sending back a handshake (the handshake can be empty, in which case a single 0 byte indicating the length is sent back). The substream is rejected by closing the substream without sending back a handshake. I have trouble interpreting your sentence because the words "open" and "closed" are ambiguous here. |
But can we not defer sending back the handshake until the upper layers have accepted the handshake? |
Yes, that's exactly the objective of this issue. This is different from what I understand @altonen suggested which is to always send back the handshake to the remote and then later close the substream if its handshake fails validation. All I'm saying is: either you make the handshake validation synchronous, in which case it's relatively easy to implement but not very useful, or you make the handshake validation asynchronous, in which case it's very complicated to implement. |
I still need some time to look into this but when I'm looking at this code, it seems me that the handshake is already either sent back at that point and we close the substream which leads me to me believe this is incorrect if I've understood your point @tomaka correctly. If this code is correct, however, I don't see why we couldn't move the decoding and checking to a separate protocol and close the substream there. |
Indeed, in the code that you've linked we have already sent back the handshake and we close the substream. The reason why we do that is precisely because it's not possible to do it correctly. So yes this code is not correct (and the fact that it is done this way actually causes a cascade of small issues which are a bit long to explain here). The place where substreams are accepted/denied is the behavior.rs file. When a substream is opened by the remote, it notifies the peerset, and the peerset will later accept or reject it. So it's already asynchronous, the only problem is that it's the peerset which decides to accept/reject instead of the outer API layers. It does so based purely on whether there is an available slot or whether the peer is reserved. I see two ways to implement this:

The full node currently can't really sync because the following happens repeatedly: we connect to a peer, start a request, then the peer disconnects us, and we cancel the request. Why do peers disconnect us? Because they're actually full. Substrate unfortunately doesn't implement the networking protocol as was intended, and instead of refusing peers ahead of time if it is full, it accepts them then disconnects them. See https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/issues/5685. Due to the easy-to-use-but-prone-to-race-conditions API, it is not possible to know whether the request might already have a response at the time of the disconnect. If it already has a response, then canceling the request simply discards it, which is meh. Also, peers might still answer our request even after disconnecting us. It is at their discretion. In fact, Substrate does this. "Disconnecting" in this context doesn't mean "closing the TCP connection" but "notifying that we don't want peering anymore". The TCP connection is only closed after 10 seconds of inactivity. What this PR does is: when a peer disconnects, we don't cancel the requests that targeting this peer and that are still in progress. This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. The `NotificationService` concept introduces two additional benefits: * allow protocols to start using custom handshakes * allow protocols to accept/reject inbound peers Previously the validation of inbound connections was solely the responsibility of `ProtocolController`. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. We do set the `-C target-cpu=mvp` flag to make sure that *our* code gets compiled in a way that is compatible with our executor, however this doesn't affect Rust's standard library crates (`std`, `core` and `alloc`) which are by default precompiled and still can make use of these extra features. So in this PR we force the compiler to also compile the standard library crates for us to make sure that they also only use the MVP features. I've added the `WASM_BUILD_STD` environment variable which can be used to disable this behavior if set to `0`. Unfortunately this *will* slow down the compile times when building runtimes, but there isn't much that we can do about that. There was a race condition in the pov-recovery system. If the timing is bad, it can happen that a block waits for a parent that is already queued for import. The check if a block has children waiting happens when we insert into the import queue. So we need to do an additional check once we receive the import notification for the parent block. Second issue is that `alice` was missing `--in-peers 0` and `--out-peers 0`, so alice was sometimes still fetching block via sync and the assertion on the logs in zombienet would fail. There is another potential issue that I saw once locally. We have a failing pov-recovery queue that fails from time to time to check that the retry mechanism does what it should. We now make sure that the same candidate is never failed twice, so the tests become more predictable. * Rework the event system of `sc-network` (#1370) This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. The `NotificationService` concept introduces two additional benefits: * allow protocols to start using custom handshakes * allow protocols to accept/reject inbound peers Previously the validation of inbound connections was solely the responsibility of `ProtocolController`. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. There was a race condition in the pov-recovery system. If the timing is bad, it can happen that a block waits for a parent that is already queued for import. The check if a block has children waiting happens when we insert into the import queue. So we need to do an additional check once we receive the import notification for the parent block. Second issue is that `alice` was missing `--in-peers 0` and `--out-peers 0`, so alice was sometimes still fetching block via sync and the assertion on the logs in zombienet would fail. There is another potential issue that I saw once locally. We have a failing pov-recovery queue that fails from time to time to check that the retry mechanism does what it should. We now make sure that the same candidate is never failed twice, so the tests become more predictable. * Rework the event system of `sc-network` (#1370) This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. This caused issues with light peers and `SyncingEngine` as `ProtocolController` would accept more peers than `SyncingEngine` could accept which caused peers to have differing views of their own states. `SyncingEngine` would reject excess peers but these rejections were not properly communicated to those peers causing them to assume that they were accepted. With `NotificationService`, the local handshake is not sent to remote peer if peer is rejected which allows it to detect that it was rejected. This commit also deprecates the use of `NetworkEventStream` for all notification-related events and going forward only DHT events are provided through `NetworkEventStream`. If protocols wish to follow each other's events, they must introduce additional abtractions, as is done for GRANDPA and transactions protocols by following the syncing protocol through `SyncEventStream`. This commit introduces a new concept called `NotificationService` which allows Polkadot protocols to communicate with the underlying notification protocol implementation directly, without routing events through `NetworkWorker`. This implies that each protocol has its own service which it uses to communicate with remote peers and that each `NotificationService` is unique with respect to the underlying notification protocol, meaning `NotificationService` for the transaction protocol can only be used to send and receive transaction-related notifications. At the moment, the handshake is hard-coded to be empty. After paritytech/substrate#5665, it is hard-coded to be a single byte containing the
Role
of the node.The intent, however, is to make this configurable by whatever code has registered a notifications protocol.
The difficult part in this is to figure out a good API for this.
I also don't think it's possible before paritytech/substrate#5670, because it is possible for the legacy substream to be opened before the notifications substream.
