# Filtering data in Maps

With OpenSearch dashboards, you can filter your data by drawing a shape, such as a rectangle, circle, or polygon, to form a boundary in Maps. This filter can be local or global.

To get started, perform the following steps:

1. In the **New Visualization** screen, go to **Maps**.
1. Select the **Add** button, then select the **Create new** button.
1. Select **Maps**.
