February 2024 OGC API ‐ Coverages Virtual Code Sprint
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) invites developers to the 2024 OGC API – Coverages Virtual Code Sprint to be held February 13-15, 2024, on GoToMeeting and Discord. Registration for the code sprint is free and open to the public. Please add your name to this wiki page.
The Sprint will focus on refining the OGC API – Coverages candidate Standard.
The OGC API – Coverages Standard supports the efficient retrieval of spatiotemporal data subsets for a given time, area and/or resolution of interest by clients through a Web API. Typically, this data is returned in a gridded format such as netCDF, GeoTIFF, CoverageJSON or CIS JSON, although this also extends to other coverage data types such as point clouds, for example in LAS/LASZip format. Additionally, the candidate Standard includes support for coverage tiles and listing and retrieving data and metadata for individual scenes making up the coverage.
Example types of a coverage, sometimes called a GeoDataCube, include weather and climate datasets, Earth Observation time series, static environmental data such as digital elevation models, land cover classification and point clouds obtained from LiDAR capture or photogrammetry.
In recent OGC activities, the development of a proposed GeoDataCube API Standard leverages OGC API – Coverages as a Core foundation for data access.
An OGC Sprint is a collaborative and inclusive event driven by innovative and rapid programming with minimal process and organization constraints to support the development of new applications and candidate standards.
During the virtual code sprint, there will be an opportunity for joint discussion with all participants on the goals and objectives of the event, as well as the final briefing of findings and opinions of the participants. However, the majority of the time will be spent in collaboration between participants in active coding. The virtual code sprint will mainly run from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm US Eastern Time each day.
To learn more about how the family of OGC API Standards work together to provide modular "building blocks for location" that address both simple and the most complex use-cases, visit ogcapi.org. The Sprint will take place on GoToMeeting and the OGC events Discord server from 8:00am to 6:30pm (US Eastern) each day from February 13-15, 2024.
The overarching objective of the sprint is to get the draft ready for review by the OAB and a following public comment period.
- Address remaining open issues for OGC API - Coverages - Part 1: Core
- Perform Technology Integration Experiments between Client and Server implementations
- Server implementations are encouraged to support at minimum the Core, Subsetting, Scaling and Field Selection requirement classes
- Validate the latest Candidate Standard draft document against implementations
- Experiment with the CRS, Coverage Tiles and Scenes requirement classes in particular
- Experiment with different encodings (the candidate Standard defines conformance classes for some specific encodings, but implementations can support any other encoding)
Please share your own plans for the sprint in this issue.
NOTE: Additional discussion items on specific topics may be added during the sprint within the Practical work sessions
