looks good, I like all the information about how to use the demo data. Maybe in a future iteration, it could be made more prominent, maybe as extra text on the page, rather than in a tooltip. But I thinks it works well for now.

That's possible, but I think it would be in tension with keeping the UI somewhat stable in the two modes. Perhaps a few distinct message boxes? Would like to sketch out alternatives and get feedback before spending too much time here.
