The current getting started guide assumes the user will be starting using the SDK building block packages like tracing, node, and metrics. In the future, it is expected most users will use the SDK package as a starting point and it would be better for the getting started guide to reflect that.

Does it make sense to wait to do this until #1484 lands?

Is this still an open good first issue that is up for grabs? @dyladan

I also noticed that the getting started guide is a little behind the latest updates to the various otel packages and I could start there for updating if that'd be okay.

@dyladan The getting started guide for Node.JS looks up to date so I think this issue can be closed.

It's quite confusing that the docs in opentelemetry-js diverge so much from those in the node docs as a newbie, this might merit revisiting.

Hi Craig! (@ringerc)

When you have a moment would you kindly point out a few divergences?

I'd be more than happy to support in updating the docs 🙂
