This feature is inspired by browser devtools. This PR modifies util.inspect(obj) to additionally show the name of the function that constructed the object. This often reveals useful information about the object's prototype. In other words, instead of

> new Cls
{}

we have

> new Cls
Cls {}

This also works with exotic objects:

> class ArrayCls extends Array {}
> new ArrayCls(1, 2, 3)
ArrayCls [ 1, 2, 3 ]

The names of "trivial" constructors like Object and Array are not shown, unless there is a mismatch between the object representation and the prototype:

> Object.create([])
Array {}

The constructor displayed is the first function-valued 'constructor' property found by traversing the object and its prototypes. Anonymous functions and non-value descriptors are ignored. Note that cyclic prototypes are illegal so the search always terminates (unless one overrides getPrototypeOf with a proxy, but then I would argue you get what you deserve).

Display of boxed primitives is unchanged. One could imagine the following:

> class NumberCls extends Number {}
> new NumberCls(0)
[NumberCls: 0]

but right now, this will display [Number: 0]. This is largely because I am unhappy that the display of boxed primitives is inconsistent with how other exotic objects are displayed (Maps, Sets, Promises). But since boxed primitives are so rarely used this argument is ripe for bikeshedding and I would rather not have that stall the bulk of this feature.

I am +1 for this feature as I was looking into it myself.

I can think of one case that will pick the wrong constructor name though:

function A() {}
var a = new A();
a.constructor = function B() {};
util.inspect(a); // B {}

This case could be handled correctly by using the v8::Object::GetConstructorName method on the C++ side.
I tried it and unfortunately there seems to be a problem with extended classes. The method always returns the name of the base class. Do you think I should open an issue on v8's tracker for that?

Super useful, definitely in favor. Note that Chrome had a regression about the way he does this - summoning @paulirish and @Zirak who are familiar with more details about this.

@targos Yeah, you can fake the constructor. I did look at the capabilities of Debug.MakeMirror (since we use it for inspecting promises) and didn't see anything that would help me find Guaranteed Correct™ constructors, but it doesn't surprise me that there is a C++ API for it.

I'm not sure if allowing fakes is a feature or a bug. I tend to just assume people will do the right thing since there is no avoiding weird object model corner cases in JavaScript. For example, one might assume that a.constructor === A implies a instanceof A but this is not so:

> a = new A
> a instanceof A
true
> A.prototype = {}
> a instanceof A
false
> a.constructor === A
true

However I will note that one could work around your example by starting the constructor search on the prototype, although this wouldn't help if you did A.prototype.constructor = B.

@targos as for the V8 bug, I couldn't say. I'll note that if GetConstructorName is anything like the intrinsic %_ClassOf, ignoring subclasses is intentional.

@benjamingr The bug was in Map::GetConstructor, but since he's not touching internals here he's good in this case.

This would be a really nice feature to have; one thing to consider is how it'll scale with nested objects, for instance:

function Foo () {
    this.b = new Bar();
    this.d = new Bar();
}
function Bar () {
    this.c = 4;
}
require('util').inspect(new Foo());

Right now the output is { b: { c: 4 }, d: { c: 4 } }, what would you like it to be?

I'm not familiar enough with the behavior of this in the browser or anything to know how it compares, but in general I am +1 on adding this.

It'd be helpful if you could demonstrate how each browser presents constructors (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, maybe Safari).

@trevnorris

Overall I'm +1. There are some edge cases that should be addressed. For example how would anonymous functions be displayed?

👍 I'll try to remember to review tomorrow.

If there is no constructor this just returns undefined I guess..?

Yes.

I modified this so we explicitly return null instead of relying on the implicit undefined.

A check for anon functions would also be nice, Maybe also String objects? (new String('cats'))

Edit: also, what happens if you feed it a generator?

Have you actually ever seen a String object or Number object in the wild
outside of people talking about the quirky typesystem ;)?

Hmmm, I think so, sadly.

It should handle it anyways.

Sorry for the delay, all.

@silverwind Chrome displays object constructors similar to what I have, except that they do not elide Object, so {} will display as Object {}. They elide constructors completely for arrays, even subclassed ones. Firefox ignores constructors, any object always displays as Object {...} and any array always displays as Array [...]. I don't have access to Edge, but IE11 ignores constructors. I don't have access to Safari at all.

Also see responses to others.

@trevnorris Right now anonymous functions are simply ignored, and we continue to traverse the prototype until we find a constructor with a name. This is consistent with Chrome. Do you think this is suboptimal? If so we could display like <anonymous> { }

@Fishrock123

A check for anon functions would also be nice

See above

Maybe also String objects? (new String('cats'))

Right now all boxed primitives have a special display: [String: 'cats'], [Number: 0], etc. As stated in the original post, one could imagine adding subclassing support ([StringSubclass: 'cats'], ...) but I didn't make any changes because I think we should first fix their inconsistent display. I think new String('cats') should display as String { 'cats' }, new Number(0) should display as Number { 0 }, etc. This is how Chrome displays them, except that they expose the primitive as an "internal property": Number {[[PrimitiveValue]]: 0}.

If there is universal agreement that we should change the display I can add it + subclassing support in this PR but I figured it would be contentious.

what happens if you feed it a generator?

> function *x() { }
> x()
GeneratorFunctionPrototype {}

In Chrome, this looks like:

> x()
x {[[GeneratorStatus]]: "suspended", [[GeneratorReceiver]]: Window}

I don't think it's possible to get the function name through vanilla JS but with the debug API we probably could.

SGTM to be improved in the future. Let's see what the others think.

@trevnorris
Copy link

@monsanto Think I was expecting to see the same as it would be as if an error had been thrown. e.g.

> (function() { (function() { throw Error('a'); }()); }());
VM544:2 Uncaught Error: a
    at Error (native)
    at <anonymous>:2:35
    at <anonymous>:2:48
    at <anonymous>:2:54

Though Chrome does have a few interesting things:

> var a = [function() { }, function() { throw Error('b'); }]
undefined
> a
[anonymous(), a()]

So why the first one would be anonymous but the last be given a variable name I'm not sure.

But yeah. Guess I'd expect that if a name for the function can't be immediately found then it would just say anonymous.

@silverwind
Copy link
Contributor

@trevnorris:

That Chrome example looks broken/confusing to me. I much prefer the output it gives when you put it in a single statement:

> [function() { }, function() { throw Error('b'); }]
< [function(), function()]

@monsanto:

Safari seems to put anything between {} into expandable lists. Not really comparable.
Chrome does seem to only hide Array, but not Object. I like your approach to hiding both better actually.
Firefox does put Object before anything, as you mentioned. Pretty uninformative.
Edge I can't test here.

+1 from me on this PR, need to check if more edge cases exist before I can sign this off. I think we should leave other related improvements for future PRs.

@trevnorris
Copy link
Contributor

@silverwind The example showing how the anonymous function in the array is magically assigned the name of the variable is the strange behavior I was trying to point out just for contrast. I definitely don't agree it should work that way. ;-)

@silverwind
Copy link
Contributor

Played with it a bit, seems to work well. The representation of constructors in literals is a bit confusing without syntax highlighting, but overall I think the benefits outweight the drawbacks:

Foo { b: Bar { c: 4 }, d: Bar { c: 4 } }

On the REPL, I could see some coloring being added to constructors (and more importantly, properties), but that's material for another PR.

LGTM

@monsanto shall we land this?

@monsanto
Copy link

@trevnorris Do you consider wanting "anonymous" as the constructor name as blocking? I would personally prefer Chrome's behavior here as "anonymous" doesn't convey any information about the prototype. If we find a prototype with a name further in the chain at least gives partial information.

@silverwind if @trevnorris OKs this then yeah I think it is ready to land.

Note, that some changes in the v3.x series as well as major breaking changes in this release constitute changes required for full convergence of the Node.js and io.js projects.

* **child_process**: `ChildProcess.prototype.send()` and `process.send()` operate asynchronously across all platforms so an optional callback parameter has been introduced that will be invoked once the message has been sent, i.e. `.send(message[, sendHandle][, callback])` (Ben Noordhuis) [#2620](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2620).

## 2015-09-02, Version 3.3.0, @rvagg

### Notable changes

* **build**: Add a `--link-module` option to `configure` that can be used to bundle additional JavaScript modules into a built binary (Bradley Meck) [#2497](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2497)
* **docs**: Merge outstanding doc updates from joyent/node (James M Snell) [#2378](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2378)
* **http_parser**: Significant performance improvement by having `http.Server` consume all initial data from its `net.Socket` and parsing directly without having to enter JavaScript. Any `'data'` listeners on the `net.Socket` will result in the data being "unconsumed" into JavaScript, thereby undoing any performance gains. (Fedor Indutny) [#2355](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2355)
* **libuv**: Upgrade to 1.7.3 (from 1.6.1), see [ChangeLog](https://github.com/libuv/libuv/blob/v1.x/ChangeLog) for details (Saúl Ibarra Corretgé) [#2310](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2310)
* **V8**: Upgrade to 4.4.63.30 (from 4.4.63.26) (Michaël Zasso) [#2482](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2482)

### Known issues

See https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/labels/confirmed-bug for complete and current list of known issues.

* Some uses of computed object shorthand properties are not handled correctly by the current version of V8. e.g. `[{ [prop]: val }]` evaluates to `[{}]`. [#2507](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/2507)
* Some problems with unreferenced timers running during `beforeExit` are still to be resolved. See [#1264](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/issues/1264).
* Surrogate pair in REPL can freeze terminal. [#690](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/issues/690)
* `process.send()` is not synchronous as the docs suggest, a regression introduced in 1.0.2, see [#760](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/issues/760).
* Calling `dns.setServers()` while a DNS query is in progress can cause the process to crash on a failed assertion. [#894](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/issues/894)
* `url.resolve` may transfer the auth portion of the url when resolving between two full hosts, see [#1435](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/issues/1435).

## 2015-08-25, Version 3.2.0, @rvagg

### Notable changes

* **events**: Added `EventEmitter#listenerCount(event)` as a replacement for `EventEmitter.listenerCount(emitter, event)`, which has now been marked as deprecated in the docs. (Sakthipriyan Vairamani) [#2349](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2349)
* **module**: Fixed an error with preloaded modules when the current working directory doesn't exist. (Bradley Meck) [#2353](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2353)
* **node**: Startup time is now about 5% faster when not passing V8 flags. (Evan Lucas) [#2483](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2483)
* **repl**: Tab-completion now works better with arrays. (James M Snell) [#2409](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2409)
* **string_bytes**: Fixed an unaligned write in the handling of UCS2 encoding. (Fedor Indutny) [#2480](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2480)
* **tls**: Added a new `--tls-cipher-list` flag that can be used to override the built-in default cipher list. (James M Snell) [#2412](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2412) _Note: it is suggested you use the built-in cipher list as it has been carefully selected to reflect current security best practices and risk mitigation._

## 2015-08-18, Version 3.1.0, @Fishrock123

### Notable changes

* **buffer**: Fixed a couple large memory leaks (Ben Noordhuis) [#2352](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2352).
* **crypto**:
  - Fixed a couple of minor memory leaks (Karl Skomski) [#2375](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2375).
  - Signing now checks for OpenSSL errors (P.S.V.R) [#2342](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2342). **Note that this may expose previously hidden errors in user code.**
* **intl**: Intl support using small-icu is now enabled by default in builds (Steven R. Loomis) [#2264](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2264).
  - [`String#normalize()`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/String/normalize) can now be used for unicode normalization.
  - The [`Intl`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Intl) object and various `String` and `Number` methods are present, but only support the English locale.
  - For support of all locales, node must be built with [full-icu](https://github.com/nodejs/node#build-with-full-icu-support-all-locales-supported-by-icu).
* **tls**: Fixed tls throughput being much lower after an incorrect merge (Fedor Indutny) [#2381](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2381).
* **tools**: The v8 tick processor now comes bundled with node (Matt Loring) [#2090](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2090).
  - This can be used by producing performance profiling output by running node with `--perf`, then running your appropriate platform's script on the output as found in [tools/v8-prof](https://github.com/nodejs/node/tree/master/tools/v8-prof).
* **util**: `util.inspect(obj)` now prints the constructor name of the object if there is one (Christopher Monsanto) [#1935](https://github.com/nodejs/io.js/pull/1935).

## 2015-08-04, Version 3.0.0, @rvagg

### Notable changes

* **buffer**:
  - Due to changes in V8, it has been necessary to reimplement `Buffer` on top of V8's `Uint8Array`. Every effort has been made to minimize the performance impact, however `Buffer` instantiation is measurably slower. Access operations may be faster in some circumstances but the exact performance profile and difference over previous versions will depend on how `Buffer` is used within applications. (Trevor Norris) [#1825](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/1825).
  - `Buffer` can now take `ArrayBuffer`s as a constructor argument (Trevor Norris) [#2002](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2002).
  - When a single buffer is passed to `Buffer.concat()`, a new, copied `Buffer` object will be returned; previous behavior was to return the original `Buffer` object (Sakthipriyan Vairamani) [#1937](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/1937).
* **build**: PPC support has been added to core to allow compiling on pLinux BE and LE (AIX support coming soon) (Michael Dawson) [#2124](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2124).
* **dgram**: If an error occurs within `socket.send()` and a callback has been provided, the error is only passed as the first argument to the callback and not emitted on the `socket` object; previous behavior was to do both (Matteo Collina & Chris Dickinson) [#1796](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/1796)
* **freelist**: Deprecate the undocumented `freelist` core module (Sakthipriyan Vairamani) [#2176](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2176).
* **http**:
  - Status codes now all use the official [IANA names](http://www.iana.org/assignments/http-status-codes) as per [RFC7231](https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7231), e.g. `http.STATUS_CODES[414]` now returns `'URI Too Long'` rather than `'Request-URI Too Large'` (jomo) [#1470](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/1470).
  - Calling .getName() on an HTTP agent no longer returns a trailing colon, HTTPS agents will no longer return an extra colon near the middle of the string (Brendan Ashworth) [#1617](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/1617).
* **node**:
  - `NODE_MODULE_VERSION` has been bumped to `45` to reflect the break in ABI (Rod Vagg) [#2096](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2096).
  - Introduce a new `process.release` object that contains a `name` property set to `'io.js'` and `sourceUrl`, `headersUrl` and `libUrl` (Windows only) properties containing URLs for the relevant resources; this is intended to be used by node-gyp (Rod Vagg) [#2154](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2154).
  - The version of node-gyp bundled with io.js now downloads and uses a tarball of header files from iojs.org rather than the full source for compiling native add-ons; it is hoped this is a temporary floating patch and the change will be upstreamed to node-gyp soon (Rod Vagg) [#2066](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2066).
* **repl**: Persistent history is now enabled by default. The history file is located at ~/.node_repl_history, which can be overridden by the new environment variable `NODE_REPL_HISTORY`. This deprecates the previous `NODE_REPL_HISTORY_FILE` variable. Additionally, the format of the file has been changed to plain text to better handle file corruption. (Jeremiah Senkpiel) [#2224](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2224).
* **smalloc**: The `smalloc` module has been removed as it is no longer possible to provide the API due to changes in V8 (Ben Noordhuis) [#2022](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2022).
* **tls**: Add `server.getTicketKeys()` and `server.setTicketKeys()` methods for [TLS session key](https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5077.txt) rotation (Fedor Indutny) [#2227](https://github.com/nodejs/node/pull/2227).
* **v8**: Upgraded to 4.4.63.26
  - ES6: Enabled [computed property names](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Operators/Object_initializer#Computed_property_names)
  - ES6: `Array` can now be subclassed in strict mode
  - ES6: Implement [rest parameters](https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Functions/rest_parameters) in staging, use the `--harmony-rest-parameters` command line flag
  - ES6: Implement the [spread operator](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Operators/Spread_operator) in staging, use the `--harmony-spreadcalls` command line flag
  - Removed `SetIndexedPropertiesToExternalArrayData` and related APIs, forcing a shift to `Buffer` to be reimplemented based on `Uint8Array`
  - Introduction of `Maybe` and `MaybeLocal` C++ API for objects which _may_ or _may not_ have a value.
  - Added support for PPC

### Known issues

See https://github.com/nodejs/node/labels/confirmed-bug for complete and current list of known issues.

* Some problems with unreferenced timers running during `beforeExit` are still to be resolved. See [#1264](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/1264).
* Surrogate pair in REPL can freeze terminal. [#690](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/690)
* `process.send()` is not synchronous as the docs suggest, a regression introduced in 1.0.2, see [#760](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/760).
* Calling `dns.setServers()` while a DNS query is in progress can cause the process to crash on a failed assertion. [#894](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/894)
* `url.resolve` may transfer the auth portion of the url when resolving between two full hosts, see [#1435](https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/1435).
