### When Systems Break: Cloud Disaster Stories with a Silver Lining
- Speaker: Lorenzo David, [Confluent](https://www.confluent.io/)
- When: Wednesday, 18 December 2024, 13:00 - 14:30

#### Abstract
Distributed cloud infrastructure provides value to organizations both organizationally and technologically, offering advantages over more traditional monolithic systems. However, the complexity of managing this infrastructure at scale, across a multi-cloud environment, is not trivial and requires a fundamental shift in the way engineers operate and ensure the reliability of the system.

In this seminar, we will provide insights into how modern cloud-based infrastructure is architected and discuss standard Site Reability Engineering (SRE) practices. We will then examine disaster scenarios, from simple breakages to more complex regional outages, and share lessons learned from real-world incidents.

#### Short Bio
Lorenzo David is an Engineering Manager at Confluent and a 2015 alumni of Politecnico di Torino and Eurecom ParisTech. He has 10 years of experience across US and Italy, building cloud infrastructure and products in networking and cybersecurity.

### Evolution of Telecommunications Networks towards Cloud Native (in Italian)
- Speaker: Giuseppe Ferraris
- When: Tuesday, Jan 23, 2024, 17:00 - 18:30
### Unikernels
- Speaker: Federico Parola, Politecnico di Torino
- When: Wednesday, 18 December 2024, 14:30 - 16:00

#### Abstract
This seminar will provide an overview of the architecture of the TIM Network for its different components, including the Access Network, Metro Network, and Backbone. It will then analyze how this network can evolve towards a new paradigm where network functions are realized by cloud-native applications. Finally, it will provide information about the Sylva project of the Linux Foundation Europe, which aims to produce an open-source software stack for the realization of a Container as a Service infrastructure that can be used to support carrier-grade network functions.

### Composable Disaggregated Infrastructures
- Speaker: Christian Pinto, IBM Research
- When: Friday, 10 January 2025, 16:00 - 17:30

#### Abstract
Composable Systems are a new paradigm for building computer systems that aims at improving utilization of hardware, reducing energy consumption and enables the infrastructure to dynamically adapt to different incoming workloads, rather than the way around. However, this technology is not yet the state of the art for building data centers and it requires further efforts on the hardware, software and standardization initiatives. In particular operating system, boot loaders and management software are a big area of exploration in this moment. This talk will go through the landscape of composable disaggregated infrastructure, describing existing commercial solutions and ongoing research and efforts for integrating with the cloud control data plane.

#### Short bio
** Christian Pinto** is a Staff Research Scientist in the "Next Generation Systems and Cloud" team at IBM Research Europe (Ireland Lab). Christian’s research activities and interests are focused on novel cloud computing paradigms, and applications of distributed systems and cloud computing concepts to the field of Artificial Intelligence, virtualization and computer architecture. In the recent years, Christian is been working in the area of disaggregated and composable systems, including participating to the development of a memory disaggregation prototype and conducting research on application of this technology to cloud infrastructure and its integration in the Linux memory management system. Christian holds a Ph.D. in Computers and Electronic Engineering from University of Bologna, and a Master degree in Computer Engineering from the same university.
