Note that the hex file contains fuses mapped to address 0x820000; avrdude will raise an error when trying to program the hex file to flash. It's recommended to use the ELF file for programming all areas (flash, lfuse, hfuse, efuse) as the Makefile does; avrdude is able to pull data from the corresponding ELF sections.
