The USB port seems to be able to output more than the standard 500mA limit. When connected to an overclocked Raspberry Pi (RPI) with a WiFi Dongle and using full CPU and GPU power (video acquisition with GPU accelerated h264 encoding), there is no rebooting of the RPI. Since the RPI is known to drain at least 800mA in this configuration, we can guess that the EV3 USB port can provide at least this current.
