I'm reopening the discussion here because we also have a situation where custom icons would make sense. The existing ones in SymbolKind are not sufficient. Also, there are many referenced in https://code.visualstudio.com/api/references/icons-in-labels that are not in the code (or maybe just not in the LSP APIs). At least having access to those would help give more variety for different use cases where the outline is not representing a programming language.

A custom icon wouldn't have to be required. Extension authors can use existing ones if they meet their needs. Please reconsider this as it would make extensions much more robust.
