Reverts #3007
There's a problem with this where other people's messages are not being read by screen readers. The logic states mentioned in #3007 (comment) are not trivially fixable for screen readers.
In the interest of not shipping a broken feature, we're reverting this to unblock the release candidate and hope to fix it in the next iteration.
