The most important thing for people is to have ownership of the analytics, whereas asking for people to install software on their server might seem like a hassle.
Overall the goal is to create of a hosted solution where people can connect and view their data. That way the community can focus on improving the UI while the users still feel in control (with minimal effort).
This model will potentially attract a broader audience - either website owners that don't want to install backend software or have a different backend (other than Node.js).
There are myriad options as data import methods that can be supported - but to keep things simple the analytics app should take care of the data recording. The data can be stored in one of the many cloud storage solutions (AWS, Google Drive, even Dropbox) that the user will own. By logging in to the app, the user grants access to a specific area in their storage, which will be populated by the log data.
