UASB

Welcome to UASB! We are redesigning Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) wastewater treatment systems to be cheaper, simpler to fabricate, and easy to implement to provide affordable wastewater treatment across the world. For more information, read our research reports or see our latest poster presentation from the 2018 NEGSWS conference.

Check out a Onshape model of our proposed UASB here and a model of the UASB that was built Summer 2019 here

Semester Goals:

In Fall 2019, the subteam will be fabricating up to 6 UASB reactors to be installed at the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility for testing and data collection. Wastewater will be pumped through the reactors and the effluent water will be tested to determine the reactors' efficiencies. This will let UASB know what modifications should be made to the design. Using the two reactors that are already built, the subteam will first determine wheteher pulsed flow or continuous flow is better in eliminating preferential pathways and maximizing efficiency. Based on these results, parameters will be changed on subsequent reactors to test additional variables affecting UASB efficiency.

Note: The history of the team goes back as far as 2013; however, the current state of the team involves work done from Spring 2017 onwards. More information on lab scale research can be located on the AguaClara Google Drive both under "Active Subteams" and "Archived Subteams."
