I am working on a somewhat restricted server where it is harder to install h5py to serialize weights. Can I get a suboptimal (but functionally equivalent) result by pickling the entire model and then loading it into memory using the cPickle module?

Yes, you probably can. But this is not recommended and this is not guaranteed to work all the time (due to how Theano handles memory).

For people coming here from Google looking for a way to serialize a Keras model: How can I save a Keras model? (See #59)

Why doesn't keras simply add the pickle protocol functions (__reduce_ex__ and __setstate__) to Model? Seems straightforward enough, and could use the same mechanism as model.save / load_model.

Another case where one needs pickle support is when I have models as part of a data structure eg a data frame. One can't pickle the data frame anymore.

I put a class that does just this on PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/keras-pickle-wrapper/, on GitHub at https://github.com/wwoods/keras_pickle_wrapper.
