How old is JupyterLab 2? Given this is a major release can we drop it?
Maybe, but I'd like to uncouple that discussion from this PR. In my mind, we should if several other projects stop supporting lab2 also. |

Sorry I missed this earlier. The changes look fine, and I'm +1 on merging it as-is, with perhaps some iteration on (partial) ideas on #370 before doing a full release. |
